Jamming problem 39A
« on: March 06, 2004, 05:34:52 AM »
It appears that my 39-A is trying to feed two rounds at once from the follower. Needless to say, this does a royal job of tying up the rifle, and I have to dis-assemble it to clear this problem. Leaves the lever in open position and is effectively jammed but good. Noticed that the screw holding the lever to the frame was somewhat loose the last time this happened so tightened it up, wondering if that was the cause. Anyway, as noted by another contributor, I bought this one about 25 years ago for about $109, put a Williams receiver sight on it and is it a shooter. Still looks like new, too. Wouldn't part with it. Some might disagree, but it has the Winchester 9422 beat all hollow, had one of those too, seemed to want to spit powder back around the firing pin once in a while. Anyway, it also had a horrid trigger, bought it around 1972 and thought it was pretty slick at the time, wish I had bought a 39 then.

Thanks for any help you might give. Perhaps a worn part?

Jack

Jack,  I had a similar problem on one of my 39A's --- found that the cartridge cutoff (stops the cartridge from coming out of the tube) was weak. Replaced it and voila!
Hope this helps ----- John

Is that the silver looking little plate on the right side of the receiver which is visible if the rifle is broken down?  I believe it is screwed on--I will have to look at a blow-up of that rifle to be sure. It has some wear on it and is scratched up so maybe that is it. Kind of a springy little piece of metal if memory serves me right.

Thanks for the info.

Yes, that's the culprit! The cutoff is a tiny flat spring, slightly bent and blued when it was new. I have these in stock for $5 each, including S&H. email me if you need one. Mine are original Marlin stock items.
