My Savage is a 99DL Series A. I know that because it is stamped on the reciever left side just below the scope mount. The print is small though. Best of luck. POW

Cruser"  Most are marked accordingly and then with that said you may find a occasional one that has ben modified over the years but where you see the model # right next to it it will have a letter designation if required. :D    JIM

Most of the 99'sa are not marked as to the model.  Most of them just say 99.  Some are marked, my 99F is marked on the barrel but most of the earlier ones are not.  The only differences are in the shape of the stocks and whether they are take/down etc.  you can probable go over to
www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php and go to the Savage Collectors forum.  they can probable tell you what you need to know.  Be ready with information though.  Serial number range 123xxx, caliber, barrel length, takedown or not, shape of forend, (schnauble sp) on front of the lever boss is stamped a number or letter that can help tell the year. I maybe could tell you but these guys can definitely get you informed.

The 99's are sweet.  I only have 6 of them now.  Two of the 300 both R's one made in 1951 and the other in 1954.  They sure knew how to make them.  My oldest is a 303 Savage that was made in 1905.  It is going hunting with me next year.  Just watch out , 99 are adictive, just like Lays Potato Chips, You can't have just one.

Marlin Shooter

I have one in each of the four Savage Brand Calibers,  303, 300, 22 HP and 250-3000. Also got a takedown in 30-30 and the extra 300.  Have had others and wish I still had them , especially the 284.  Been out of work now for a year so have had to pass up several nice ones.

I think my next one will be 303. The one I have now is a 300sav. There hard to find in good shape around here or if they are in good shape expensive.

Savage began stamping the tiny oval on the "lever boss" (the extension of the receiver into which the lever fits and rotates) starting in 1949 when Savage put the letter "A" inside the oval together with other figures.

On many Model 99 rifles, this “oval” is indistinct as are the letters and figures inside the circle. On my own late model “EG”, serial #709XXX, made in 1953, only the letter “E” and the rear half of the oval’s circumference barely show on the lever boss. The front half of the oval’s circumference and whatever is inside the oval in front of the letter “E” is indistinguishable.

The letter "A" inside the tiny oval on the lever boss indicates the rifle was made in 1949. Therefore, the letter:
B = 1950
C= 1951
D= 1952
E= 1953
F= 1954
G= 1955
H= 1956
I= 1957
J= 1958
K= 1959
L= 1960
M= 1961
N= 1962
O= SKIPPED
P=1963
Q= SKIPPED
R= 1964
S= 1965
T= 1966
U= 1967
V= 1968
W= 1969
X= 1970

-------------------------
Here’s a clarifying point posted by Rick99 concerning the same matter:  (modified by me 1/23/04 to include the years 1969 &  1970 as requested by Rick99)

“The last year (sic… that Savage used the letters on the lever boss) was 1970.  No "O" or "Q" (sic… meaning Savage did not use the letters “O” and “Q” in their annual lettering sequence on the lever boss). But don't bet your poke on what you see stamped. A lot of the letters, when poorly stuck, look like another and a lot of them are poorly struck! When in question ask us for a serial date. I can get you pretty close. My data is not real good on the 60's. I'm still working that area.”

Rick....
-------------------------

And here’s another comment from Jed1899:

“ok heres the scoop...O and Q were not used because of their look alike similarities....This info should be included...”
--------------------------

I hope this helps you and others to determine the year your Model 99 was manufactured.
