This is the best warning I've seen, coming from someone who lived through the same playbook we're living.
"Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom. It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves."

---- William Pitt (the Younger), Speech in the House of Commons, November 18, 1783

A nice presentation but it left out some important facts.
"Yugoslavia" was a man made creation of various parts of other countries, with different ethnic backgrounds. Many resented being annexed by the central power even if it meant NOT being annexed by another.  Further under Tito the country was divided along ethnic lines into 6 republics (should sound familiar to those who have heard about dividing the states along "political", really cultural, lines.  The United States has always been a mix of ethnicities and cultures.  Unless we ALLOW ourselves to be divided along lines of differences this is not our course.  Privilege of one group over another does tend to drive those divides - in ALL societies.  Concentration of wealth is one of the triggers to societal change according to one theory of societal evolution.  These cycles are hundreds of years and have distinct periods.  As usual most folks tend to view the EXPLOTATION of circumstance with the DEVELOPMENT of that circumstance.  Governments don't have the power to create these societal schisms, but they can exploit those that already exist.

"same playbook and script applied to varying situations all leading to same oppression and result."

What playbook? Taking a made up country that had been under an oppressive DICTATORSHIP since the Nazi's  invaded in the second world war?  Exploiting the resentments of different ethnic groups (taken from other countries and mashed together to form a new "country")  The wars in Yugoslavia are the result of great powers redrawing the lines of "country", kind of like the British and French did in the Middle East (Iraq, a perfect example of a made up country from disparate tribes forced together to form a "country").

I hope you don't buy the premise that "oppression" started in 1989 as she purports?  That would be a great insult to the people of Yugoslavia under Hitler and Tito.

Of course I know that any narrative that fits the desired outcome will do.  Such is the story of propaganda...

To paraphrase what I read about Tito years back, he told his population : You will tolerate each other and get along or I will execute you.

FAR, far, far, far, far better than that which followed, period.
Tito did not kow-tow to Marxist Russia, an item which I read very, very often when I was young, which made his the most free of Eastern Europe.

Last note -- SHE WAS THERE -- for  you to tell her she is wrong , even though she lived through it, is the same godwannabe self-righteous arrogance that the Democrats are using to try to force Marxism on the U.S.

Wow quite a rebuke.  First I never said she was WRONG - please quote me on that???  " You will tolerate each other and get along or I will execute you."  Yes sounds like a paradise of freedom. "FAR, far, far, far, far better than that which followed, period."  You must have been a fan of Saddam Hussein, he held the country in a iron fist so there was no infighting under him either.  She was there???  She looks awful young to have seen the Nazi invasion and rise of Tito?  So is she about 80 or 90 years old???  Tito was a HUGE follower of Stalin, but fell out of favor later - to say his rule was the most "free" in Eastern Europe, is like saying being shot is a better death than being sent to the gas chamber.
Finally I did not dispute bloodshed and suffering in the civil war she described - it was a terrible war.  The cause of it was hardly the governments activity alone - it was based on DECADES of resentment built up by FORCING groups who had been enemies for centuries to live together "You will tolerate each other and get along or I will execute you".

Please read what I write not what you want to hear.  As far as groups killing each other the Sunni and Shiite Muslims have been doing a fine job of this in the Middle East, especially since the Europeans drew up the boundaries after WWI.

SHE knows her country and how it has changed, YOU do not.

More than one expert on regional politics and how U.S. policies have changed it have said BUSH made it far, far worse, including people who lived under Saddam said
he did not persecute any non-Muslim religion, now they are.
You said : A nice presentation but it left out some important facts. facts to to who , you?
She has forgotten more about governing in HER country than you will ever know; I read just exactly what you said and you made a typical self-righteous reply to something you actually know nothing about.

If history is so important in such things that what the hyper racist bigot Woodrow Wilson did to this country should headline EVERY discussion oh why this country ended up in the sluice hole it has but as he is a Democrat his racist bigotry is conveniently ignored.
But such history, and Hitler and Tito are really irrelevant to what is happening now; and again Tito prevented Yugoslavia from being the crap hole Hungary and East Germany were so you are ignoring what you do not want to see.
And then we have Muslim Albania with its Hoxhaist government, so much better than Tito:

Hoxhaism  is a variant of anti-revisionist Marxism–Leninism that developed in the late 1970s due to a split in the Maoist movement, appearing after the ideological dispute between the Communist Party of China and the Party of Labour of Albania in 1978. The ideology is named after Enver Hoxha, a notable Albanian communist leader, who served as the First Secretary of the Party of Labour.

Hoxhaism demarcates itself by a strict defense of the legacy of Joseph Stalin, the organization of the Soviet Union under Stalinism, and fierce criticism of virtually all other communist groupings as "revisionist"—it defines currents such as Eurocommunism as anti-communist movements.

Critical of the United States, the Soviet Union, China, and Yugoslavia, Enver Hoxha labeled the latter three "social imperialist" and condemned the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968, before withdrawing Albania from the Warsaw Pact in response. Hoxhaism asserts the right of nations to pursue socialism by different paths, dictated by the conditions in those countries, although Hoxha personally held the view that Titoism was "anti-Marxist" in overall practice.

The Albanians succeeded in ideologically winning over a large share of Maoists, mainly in Latin America (such as the Popular Liberation Army and the Marxist-Leninist Communist Party of Ecuador as well as the Revolutionary Communist Party of Brazil), but they also had a significant international following in general.

Following the fall of the People's Socialist Republic of Albania in 1991, the Hoxhaist parties grouped themselves around an international conference founded in 1994 and the publication Unity and Struggle.

"I know you want to gaslight her message.  But she's not talking about the Yugoslav history since 1918. She's talking about the communist era wherein the communist took control by employing racial, ethnic, religious,  regional, economic, historical variables to pit factions against each other, weakening the region and allowing the communist autocrats to seize control and clamp a tyranny on the region. Its how they roll."

Better check history again. Yugoslavia was invaded by Hitler, well before the speaker was born.  After the war it was Tito who managed to take control, he was a big fan of Stalin; but Russia was more concerned with the rest of Europe.  This is when "communism" took hold in Yugoslavia.  Between the formation of Yugoslavia in 1918 (formally 1929) and the Nazi invasion in 1941 there was great infighting between the various factions; Serbs, Croats, Albanians etc.  The factions were not "pitted" against each other they resented each other for various reasons; did like that the Serbs took control, weren't Serbian etc.  Tito took control and installed communism as a RESULT of WWII (with the help of Russia and the US allies).  I am not arguing about what happened after the collapse of the Soviet Union, just that, that did not precipitate the rise of Communism in Yugoslavia.

For Bob Riebe, my comment about Saddam was in reference to a strong leader PREVENTING infighting among historical enemies.  Once that is gone the old hates are allowed to comeout.
