Fort Worth 100-vehicle pileup leaves at least 3 dead, multiple people injured: officials
The number of fatalities and vehicles involved is expected to continue growing

Massive pileup traps drivers on Texas freeway
Dozens of vehicles collide on highway in Fort Worth, Texas. Bill Hemmer reports.

Icy conditions in Texas have led to a massive pile-up in Fort Worth involving dozens of vehicles, as authorities urge residents to stay home.

Fort Worth Police confirmed to Fox News that there were three fatalities and an unknown number of people injured at this time.

The number of vehicles -- including both passenger vehicles and 18-wheelers -- involved is between 70 and 100 at this time, police said, but the number could end up being much higher, as first responders continue to assess the scene.

The same conditions that led to the incident have also made it difficult for local agencies to conduct rescue operations. The current numbers are not known, with information changing by the minute, according to Mike Drivdahl, Fort Worth Fire public information officer.

(KDFW)

"We don’t have any firms on total numbers of fatalities that we’re comfortable with releasing, because that number continues to change," Drivdahl told Fox News. "I can tell you that there are multiple people that we have transported in various conditions."

Drivdahl said that people continue to walk up to rescue workers to report medical events.

The Fort Worth Police Department and local service Med Star are on the scene, as well, and assisting with the search and rescue.

Due to the icy conditions, the agencies are bringing in sand trucks to help improve law enforcement and the fire department’s ability to reach and assist people in need.

"This is obviously not something we deal with a lot in Fort Worth," Drivdahl said, referring to the ice and snow. "But we do have the resources to respond to it."

Officials asked that residents remain home due to extreme conditions. Between that and the accident, the roads are "very dangerous," they said.

Speed kills.
When conditions get slick, slow down, it's as simple as that.

Many years ago we were driving to Dyersburg Tn. for CHRISTmas on interstate 40 and it was snowing heavy, so I was driving slow with flashers on.
A van with CHRISTmas presents stacked in the back passed us and my wife asked why we couldn't drive that fast and I told her we might find that van upside down further on.
About 20 miles later we came on the wreckage.  The van was laying on its side with a wrecker backed up to it and the fire dept. was picking up presents and throwing in the van and on the wrecker.
the passengers had already been taken away.
BTW, it was on a bridge.

Now they say a total of eight killed in the pile up.  I can't imagine icy roads are a common thing in north Texas.

Speed kills.
When conditions get slick, slow down, it's as simple as that.
Not adjusting to, or having car prepared for weather conditions kills .
Unless the car is sitting still it has speed.
I saw fwd cars slide off of a banked curve, into the ditch at 30 miles an hour.
Driving up here without snow tires is foolishness.

You can get a ticket up here for driving too fast for weather conditions, so the law officer can make speeding what ever velocity he or she wants.
I am not sure if we ever had laws up here requiring chains under certain conditions but I know some mountain states do.

Bridges are notorious for icing over when the rest of the road seems just fine.
Earlier this winter twice while I was driving on a four lane road, heavy traffic; it had misted in the morning but road were dry, temp. still in thirties but when I drove across a bridge you could see it had not dried off and the rear-end of my car started to slip sideways and I could hear my tires spin.
I just backed off of the gas pedal and all was well but even at 50 mph it can happen quickly.

A relative lives and works right
near the worst of the wreck.
She said she was stuck in her car
in traffic for a very long time, and
talked to her work and they told
her to go on home if she could
make it out of the gridlock.
All the roads nearby are closed.
She said it's the worst she's ever
seen. Conditions are making
sorting everything out and
any rescue efforts difficult.
Few of the people stuck in the
gridlock are prepared for the
bad weather conditions including
the relative I had contact with.
This kind of cold is the exception
and most don't wear or own
anything beyond a sweatshirt
type jacket or a light sweater

me and said there are 18 wheelers
tangled up and some concerns about
the cargoes and such.
Probably be 24 hours before the
all clear

Not to mention more on the way

From the pictures I saw of the mess, it looked like it might days to clean it all up.

If the weather south of here
showing on the radar makes it
here, it likely will be several days

In the Tulsa area as of last night they have had over 1500 car wrecks most are one car accident loose control slide off road or take out some stop signs or other things, don't know what the death toll is but I think only 3 and we are to get up to 15 inches of snow for the week end.  stay safe guys.

Looking at the pile ups it looks like mostly truckers going way to fast. Driving on ice to fast for any of them. Slow down people

Up here on a two lane roads, during slippery weather people will stack up behind semi-trailer trucks whether he is going 40-50-60 miles an hour at most one car length between them,  so if he has to stop quickly you will have a large chain reaction behind him.

Especially dangerous are the morons right behind him who if he panic brakes swerve into the other lane and then head on  some one else.
We have killed a fair number up here that way in the past 18 months.
