Which Revolver ?
« on: March 01, 2004, 12:01:20 AM »
I have a friend that wants to start using a hand gun for deer hunting here in IL ,he got the bug from me while I was sighting in a new scope on my 454 encore . He shot mine several times but wants something with less recoil and does not want a single shot. The only expereance I have with hunting pistols is with single shot so I am looking for some choices to consider. Most hunting will be from treestands out to 50yrds but maybe the occasional 100 yrd shot he would also like to scope it. All suggestions would be appreciated. Kurt
PS he will be using factory ammo only

I am partial to the S&W model 629, 6" barrel with a ultradot red dot sight.  Handles 240 grain rounds very nicely and you can practice with 44 special rounds which are even easier to manage.  Carry in the bandido rig by pistol packaging and you are ready to go.  Just what I like.
A bad day of hunting is better than a good day at the golf course.

A Ruger Super Redhawk or a Redhawk in 44 MAG with a red-dot sight works great for me. :)

I'd go ruger...my favorites...Super BlackHawk Hunters, and Super Redhawk 454/44/480...easy to scope, never wear out...I'd recomend sticking with a 7.5 barrel...the 9.5 SRH can be a little long...if you go smith, 6 inch is fine...

I carry a S&W M629 in a shoulder holster for deer hunting.  I only use factory Hornady 240 grain ammo.  For me, the max distance is somewhere in the 50-75 yard range.  Does your friend want to use iron sights or scoped?  Maybe he should first consider the style/shape.  The revolver (S&W, Taurus, etc) vs. the pistol (Ruger).  I'm told the Ruger pistol for example, is tamer on recoil compared the the revolver.  Something to do with the grip and frame design.  Maybe someone can address that for you.

Thanks for all the replies. Iwill be seeing my buddy this weekend and will pass on the info . In the mean time I think I am going to get a revolver to,at first I thought I would like a .41 as I have a .454 in encore and it kicks like a mule but the more I think about it and I bought some 45lc today I will probly go with a Grey 454 SRH 7 1/2" and stay with the iron sights on it this yr that is if I can handle the 45lc recoil alright will be trying them in the encore this weekend . Does he handload?  If so I'd look for a Ruger Redhawk with the integral scope mounts in 44 Mag.  Load it with 44 Specials and a 240 gr bullet at 1050 fps. (a cast or JHP bullet is fine)
If this were the single action forum, a blackhawk hunter would be a good choice too.

Everyone has their preference. Unlike many I CARRY A REVOLVER BY CHOICE.

They are simple to use, having the original "Point & Click" Interface.

My ALWAYS GUNS are:

S&W Airweight® Mdl37 in 38 Special.
Taurus® Mdl 617SS in 357 Magnum.

Hey look guys, a .357 mag will take down a white tail at 100 yds with a good shot if properly loaded.  Ah hell, get the .44 mag fella, they are LOTS more fun to shoot!
