Shot my Encore Today.
« on: February 29, 2004, 11:22:35 AM »
Well I got to shoot my Encore today.  To recap I have a simple blued Encore in 30-06 w/synthetic stocks, and shot a cold factory bbl with no sort of prep sans a cleaning when I first got it.  Here is what I did:

I used the iron sights at 50 yards with American Eagle 150gr FMJ (read that to mean run of the mill loads, not premium.)

The first few shots were kinds all over the place, but I am going to attribute that to getting used to the trigger because as I settled in the groups shrunk.  Towards the end I managed to put about 8 or 9 shots into a grouping I could cover with my hand.  I went through 60 rounds and everything so far is still tight (no jiggles or unusualy loosness.)   I had started out shooting by letting a little cooling time in (maybe a minute or two,) but decided towards the end to just let loose and thats when I got the acceptable groupings I mentioned above.

Now the only complaints I have are as follows:
The gun was obviously shot at the factory to sight it in.  Well it was not a very good sight in job, the Point of Impact was way low and to the left.  I fixed that.  But now comes the second complaint.  While adjusting the elevation the left set screw got buggered.  YES I was using a proper fitting screw driver.  Its almost like the screw head was made of aluminum because of the way it just tore.  Its not a biggie as I plan on scoping this rifle, but unfortunately the base I bought was for T/C Traditional Muzzelloaders (thats what I get for not looking at what the guy at the gun shop was giving me.)

So all in all a good first outing.  Ill tell ya all how things go when I get the scope on there and move up to premium shooting (before I get handloading for this gun.)

Just remember one thing, all ammo shoots different and someone else did the sight in. I would never think that a gun is factory sighted for me. But as you said it was no biggie. As far as the screws, I think all gun makers use cheap screws. I have had so many different gun makers screws get buggered up. And like you, I use the proper size screw drivers made for gunsmithing. I have been going to the hardware store and replacing a lot of screws with quality screws. But please keep use updated on your progress. :)

Will do.  I am getting ready to order my scope.  I plan on a BSA 1.5-4.5 Catseye.  Its actually made for a shotgun, but I cuurently have one on my 870 and have had an amazing time with it, which is why Im getting a second.  Im also gonna get a second synthetic buttstock and epoxy in as much lead shot as possible to make a rock steady bench platform and for long shooting sessions.  I can have the origional buttstock for carrying and field use.  I was going to chrony, but there was another person there and did not want to interupt their shooting for the amount of time it would have taken to set up.  It was just an informal shoot anyways.  I need to get some stronger bore cleaner.  There was some heavy fouling that beffuddled even the strongest stuff I got ( I even resoted to trying JB bore paste but decided to only give 2, 10 stroke swabs.)  That included multiple doses of RB17 and Iosso paste.  Ill see if the gun shop has some Sweets 7.62.  The rain is coming which means the road to the club will melt into a mud bog, so shooting will be out of the question for a bit.  When I get down there Ill start chronying premium fodder so as to get my baselin for the reloading project (looking like Im going with Nosler partitions but have yet to finalize which powder to start testing with.)  Will keep you all informed.
