Ruger Bisley 7 1/2" .44 Mag...any good?
« on: February 29, 2004, 10:41:26 AM »
:D Hi Guys,

I am thinking about getting a Ruger Bisley, blued .44 Mag.  Wanted one for years, but would like to get inputs from anyone who has one.  I will use it for a camp gun, and deer hunting when I don't feel like carrying my rifle.  Maybe just woods roaming.
I am also interested in the  the Ruger Stainless Bisley (KRBN-445W) with a 5 1/2" barrel, but my gun shop doesn't seem to know where to get one, or I should say what wholesaler has these.  Help me out guys!  I am ichin for one of these revolvers.  Whats your recommendation?

both are good guns the 7 1/2 inch gun is a little big for a hip holster. You can usually find the stainless guns on gunsamerica.com

I have the Ruger 44 mag Bisley Hunter 7 1/2" in stainless, I have topped it with a Leupold 2X EER. Off hand at 45yds I can hit the center of a  paper plate all day long. I really like this gun.

I do my own reloading, the best round I have come up with is 18.7gn of 2400 with a hornady 240gn XTP JHP bullet. I take a box of 50 rounds to the range with me and shoot them all, this is a comfortable load for me to shoot.

I am going to take this out for some white tail this yr.

I have a Bisley in .44 Mag and love it.  This revolver shoots well, and is easy to carry on my hip even with the 7 1/2" barrel.  I have done some customizing to mine and the article I wrote about that is over on Handgunhunt.com if you are interested.

I like my 41 Bisley

I really like my 41 Bisley but I think I'd like it even better if it was stainless and had a 5.5 to 6.5 inch barrel.  I like it better since I had the trigger straightened and lengthened slightly so the tip doesn't bite my finger tip.

I have to be the odd man out here.  In my opinion the Bisley grip is one of the most uncomfortable of any I have ever shot, but I seem to the only one that thinks this.  I would go with a regular BH myself.

Bulleye:

You are a man unto my heart.  I own and shoot several Blackhawks, Super blackhawks and RedHawks.  The only one that I don't like and/or shoot is the .44 mag Brisley.  I bought one maybe 10 years ago.  Took it to the range and shot maybe 24 rounds through it, put it back in the plastic box, put it in the safe and it has never seen the light of day since.  I like the hammer and trigger but the grip (for me) is terrible.  I'm glad someone else feels the same way.

don't think you will find too many people that will tell you that it is anything but good...

I shot my brother's 7 1/2 and I really liked it (skipping bowling pins accross the pasture) I think it would be a perfect fit for your application
Cheers,

:-D
Well, I ordered the Ruger Bisley (Blued) in .44 Mag, adjust  sights, 7 1/2" barrel.  It came in a week ago and I took it to the range and I am VERY happy with it.  The grip of the Bisley is much better for me that the standard Super Blackhawk frame which I sold, it feels natural and recoil is no problem at all.  That Bisley grip is amazing!  Average shots at 25 yards indoors with my wrist on a good rest was less than an inch, with an occasional flier due to the guy letting loose next to me, shooting one of those  Mitchel' 8mm Mausers (Yes I said indoors).  My group was 10 times better than his!  LOL
As for easy of carry; I arranged the holster to be on my left side of my cartridge belt-crossdraw which feels comfortable and out of the way of a slinged rifle.  I would rather have the longer barrel for longer sight radius and higher velocity.  Will try heavier loads/bullets.  I was shooting 240gar at about 1150 fops 100 each.  I am a Bisley lover from now on.  Seems like more people should check on out.  Is a lot lighter than most double actions with a 7 1/2" barrel as well -unloaded.  Seems perfect to me! :-D

Carry it on your thigh in a tactical-type holster, hanging low off of a belt and you'll find it to be very handy.....I did that with one I had and it was easy to carry and quick on the draw when needed.     Just be sure it's not totally hidden by a long coat where it would be illegal if you can't get a permit for it to be concealed.

Take care.
