The Ford Mustang isn't riding off into the sunset anytime soon.

Ford has teased the future of the Mustang with this rendering. (Ford)

The next-generation pony car will arrive for the 2023 model year and live through 2031, a new report says.

Sources with knowledge of the replacement for today’s Mustang told Automotive News that its life cycle has been extended from a planned six years to eight.

This is a possible first look at the next-generation Mustang's hybrid powertrain.

Ford has been tight-lipped about the car, beyond promising that a performance hybrid model is in the works.

The two-door and convertible is, however, expected to share platform components with the recently launched Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator, switched to a rear-wheel-drive layout for 2020 and are both available as hybrids. They also come with optional all-wheel drive, which could mean the Mustang will get that feature to help it better compete in the Snowbelt states with the Dodge Challenger GT.

The Mustang is currently the best-selling of the three American pony cars, ahead of the Challenger and third-place Chevrolet Camaro, which is reportedly being discontinued right when the new Mustang arrives.

The Mustang is one of the longest-lived American car models and has been in constant production since it was introduced as a 1964.5 model.

Makes me wonder if Ford will dicker with the Mustang till they screw it up like they did with the Pinto-Stang, Mustang II.

It sold like hot cakes one year and then drop till it was outsold by large number by the Camaro.

This time the Camaro is no challenge but the Dodge Challenger is.

in my opinion and MANY other buyers a pony car has to have a v8 in it. Most of don't care if it gets 35mpg and we want to hear a small block singing at 5000 rpm not a hum of a quiet electric motor. We don't want 6 cyls or 4 cyls with turbos with noise generators needed to make them sound like v8. Ford better be careful getting to far from the roots of the mustang. Both the camaro and Mustang have slowly gotten away from the retro look that first made them big hits and don't look much at all like the originals anymore. Some say that's why camaro sales are tanking. They keep getting away from what they are all about. An affordable fast muscle car not a video game.

I agree with you BUT do you know which models actually paid the bills, and this has been the way it was since the Mustang was created ---- BADA BOOM -- Secretary cars, i.e. the basic transportation models  often with six bangers even then.

yup if you really watch more camaros, mustangs and challengers with 4 and 6clys are on the road even today then the v8 ones. Especially with the camaros and mustangs. Guy I know in town just bought a brand new decked to the gills camaro convertible and got it with a 4cyl. Now granted those 6s and 4s would probably run with all but the hottest v8s of the 60s and 70s but there still just what you said. Secretary's cars. To me there poser cars. Don't make much sense when the v8s have more power and still get close to 30mpg and have much better resale value. Basicaly you recoup the added cost of the v8 come trade in time when comparing it to a entry motor. Its like chev pushing the new 4 cyl turbo full sized silverados. Sure you can save a bit of money buying them and gain a few mpg while you own it but even my dealer admitted there going to be tough to sell on the used lot unless there price is cut to the bone. Everyone is afraid (with good reason) that there not going to hold up for the long haul and the expensive things like turbos are going to cost a fortune if they fail.
