Garage door opener help?
« on: August 16, 2020, 10:39:41 AM »
I have a overhead Garage door with a mind of its own. I can close it with the remote next morning I look out and it is open, It has done this off and own for years good thing I live in the country. It will do it a couple of nights and then wont happen for several months Couple days ago I was at my loading bench with the door open and out of the blue it closed. No cars running up and down the road. no reason for it to just work on its own. I have tried all the TV remotes, it has did this for several years opens for a couple nights then no more for maybe 6 months or more  so any Ideas The opener is a Craftsman Brand it has the eye safety beam on it. I thought a mouse or bug might be crossing the beam at night tried getting it to open by blocking the beam but it would not open.

Mine is a Craftsman and the only problem I ever had was the door would occasionally stop for no reason.
Turns out that over the years the mount for the eyes had loosened and was breaking the beam.
Tighten that up and no more problems.

How far is your closest neighbor? You could be picking up a stray signal from another Craftsman garage door opener.

I would think it has to be a stray signal from somewhere and something. Finding the what might be impossible.

If like mine you can lock it at the key pad on the wall and it should not open from a signal whether a stray signal or the remote you have either. You could also lock it at the door with the bar used when opening and closing manually but I don't think I'd do that.

I'm not sure which would win the battle, the powered opener or the bar. I don't think either would be good.

Try locking it with the key pad on the wall and see if that keeps it closed.

My neighbor lives across the road and down a hundred yards but they don't have an garage and this has been going on for years like I said it may do it a couple times and then not happen for a year or more. It is strange that it is fine and then for no reason it starts again for a couple night then ok for who knows how long. I am about ready to remove the safeties and remote and fix it to only open with a electric key switch.

if it has the tumbler codes change the code in it and your remotes. If its a rolling code unit look at your instructions for how to clear the code and reprogram it. It will then have a different frequency it operates at. If it still does it you have a faulty activation switch in the unit.
