broke the ar10 in last night
« on: August 16, 2020, 12:12:18 AM »
was shooting 150ssts out of it and dropped 3 deer in there tracks. two doe at 200 yards and one at 400. held on the top of her back and squeezed and she folded on the spot. Kind of pushing the limit for me with a 308 but I watched her in the scope for a good 5 minutes and took my time and watched even my breathing and was pretty confident. Next time in that field its going to be a 300 mag though. Just to many long shots.

He does crop damage control hunting this time of year.

Several years ago I was tempted to get an AR10 back when Bud's was closing out their Remington R25 full camo guns in 7-08. I still kinda kick myself for not getting one. I like the 7-08 better than the .308 and love the look of full camo guns.

Bud's had them at $702 for at least a couple of years. Now I see someone has one listed on the Classifieds for about $1300, it is in .308. I think he is kidding himself on the value of it but who knows, sometimes folks pay prices I feel are outrageous.

Yes David, crop damage permits are allotted by the state in most states to shoot deer or other critters eating farm crops.

bills right. We do crop damage shooting from the middle of aug. to the end of oct. Most years can shoot as many deer as we want to. Some states don't allow you to take home the meat. Michigan does and if they didn't I sure wouldn't kill the deer. I think that rule is absolute insanity. Bill my ar10 is camo but I did it myself and it turned out real nice. A couple of people even asked if it was a camo dipped gun. I build it with psa parts and have about 550 bucks into it. Its a decent shooter but is picky. Best load was the 150 sst with 4895 but I found that bullet when I used it in the 300 wsm just tore up to much. I thought at 308 velocitys it would act better but its even explosive at those speeds. I actually recovered the bullet (or whats left of it) from that deer at 400 yards. Broadside through the lungs and it didn't even exit. What I found was a mushroomed copper bullet with the core gone. Massive damage to the ribs on both sides. Its about what I would expect to see with a 257 weatherby using ballistic tips. But like I said it was the only moa load I found. But I didn't have a lot of time to do load development with it and will spend some time next summer finding a different bullet. But at least this one does kill like lightning and I guess if I loose 10 lbs of shoulder meat or rib meat its not a big deal. If it was a one deer a year thing it would probably upset me. I broke it in and will probably stick it back in the safe for the rest of the year. This field im hunting has some long range shooting. I watched quite a few deer out at 400 yards and further and that is really pushing it for the 308. So I have my rem classic 300 H&H in the truck right now.

I always though the 300 H&H mag was the ideal 30 caliber cartridge. Feeds slick and just a tad more than a 30-06.

yup within a week of hearing they were going to make that year run a H&H I told my gun dealer to find me one. I go through stages in guns. One year im buying mag riflles the next its glocks or 1911s or big bores. Lots of rifles and handguns have been traded through the years. At one time I was down to two mag rifles a 240 wby markv and this rem classic 300. Those two will never leave this house till im planted in the ground. With good handloads loaded to the same pressures as 300 win mags it will actually give as good or slightly better velocitys then a 300 win mag will. Its rep of being only slightly better then 06 ammo comes from the fact its not loaded to the same pressures. Bottom line is most factory 06 ammo doesn't run across a real chrono at near what its claimed to do either. Its another round that is watered down when compared to rounds like the 270 and 7 mag ect.
