Whole Chocolate Milk is back.
« on: August 14, 2020, 02:12:59 PM »
It happened before in Minn. where the best you could get was 2 percent and a lot of it was  chocolate colored water but the cycle is changing again. 8)
Now the food co-ops,  health food type stores and foo-foo level stores never quit it but it was high priced usually in returnable bottles.
Now it is coming back in stores at a more reasonable price.
Promised Land and Praire Farm dairies have it out there again but I noticed some daires are doing the pound of coffee scam so instead of one-half gallon you get 52 ounces and 28 ounces instead of a quart.  :o

Forty years ago when my taste buds still worked at full capacity, and there were MANY different dairies up here, when I went on a road trip I would buy a quart/s of chocolate milk and drinking it as I drove
I found that calorie number on back often was a good indicator of how tasty it would be
Now with dairies shutting down or merging, it is getting to be too much of same slop, same same dairy.

When I want chocolate milk I add my own chocolate to whole milk. Don't think I've had store chocolate milk since grade school.

Well doggone..coincidences..  I bought my first half gallon of chocolate milk, just this past week !  Frankly, it just looked good, sitting there in the store cooler.

It's gone now, but I may pick up some more soon !

Well now, that you mentioned that, when I was a  yout, Bosco was the syrup that a very, very popular kids show advertised  ( It was on the air for thirty some years but Bosco disappeared twenty years before the end, the Bosco Jingle is still in my head )   , and my parents, being not adverse to buying what we kids wanted to try.

In reality, my dad's curiosity had him trying stuff, out of curiosity, so it did not take much convincing; well Bosco disappeared from store shelves up here and I often thought I wish Bosco was still around.

Then twenty years ago Big Deals opened in the Mall and shizzam, they had Bosco, which immediately make me think WOW, I have not had that for fifty years, how good is it?
I found that Hershey's is still the best out there as Bosco was a bit disappointing .

I also started seeing, because Big Deals had products not normally within out five State area, that there were others out there.

I found Fox's U-bet gives Hershey's genuine competition.

Alton Brown did a one of his shows on chocolate.  One of the things he showed was how to make your own chocolate syrup for chocolate milk.  I've had to give it up.  I've always been intolerant to milk fat but as I've gotten older it's a bit worse and I've lost my will to put up with the aftereffects.

The last year I worked in a motorcycle dealership, if one of the mechanics was making a run to the local convince store, he'd end up picking up chocolate milk for the entire crew.  It was the most popular drink among the Harley guys...

I often have some chocolate liquor, either booze store type or cooking type around.
Put an ounce of that into chocolate milk or milk shake and it is uniquely good.

I had never thought of doing that till I went to a Fridays restaurant thirty years ago and asked for a chocolate shake which back then they did not serve but the bartender said he had something close made with chocolate liquor.
It was excellent!

got a can of Quick in the cubbord thats probably 10 years old. Used it mostly to make chocolate malts back when i weighted 290lbs. We dont even use much white milk here. If we get a gallon it goes bad before its gone. So the wife for the most part buys a half a gallon a month. Only time we use more is when i make a batch of sausage gravy. I havent drank a glass of milk in 20 years. Only time i use it is on cereal.

I drink very little milk anymore and can't remember the last time I drank chocolate milk. I have a gg girl that loves the stuff and we just bought a gallon jug for her. He little sis drinks a little of it but nothing like the older one. We also keep k-cups of hot chocolate for the older one that she calls her "coffee" The younger actually drinks coffee but it's more creamer than coffee.

Occasionally I like a chocolate milk. But store bought product doesn't cut it lately.
But I have found a few of the almond chocolate milks are very satisfying. In particular the Silk product is quite good; and has 25% less sugar and a rich deep dark chocolate content. Good texture and mouth feel, and not overly sweet. I like it.
I like the vanila almond milks for making ice coffee, too.

I have another gg girl and her parents thought she was allergic to cow's milk and kept her on almond milk. We also kept a quart here for her and I really couldn't tell any difference in the taste between it and the real thing. I'll say one thing for it, it stays fresh for a very long time compared to cow's milk. The kid isn't allergic to genuine milk anymore if she ever was and we no long keep almond squeezin's.

Lately, I find myself turning back the page to enjoy some old, long forgotten foods & drinks.
I haven't had cold cereal in years, but lately craving more fiber, I tried some raisin bran.
Doggone, that was good..so I started to eat it more often.  I add extra raisins, and if it needs sweetening, I don't use sugar..I just grab some pancake syrup and pour a bit on before adding milk.
Chocolate milk comes into the discussion in the same way..  Rather like the fellow who has moved up in his guns , from rimfire to 30/30 to .270 and then to .338 Lapua...
Then one day his grandson asks for his own .22 LR, so gramps buys him a .22 rifle.  Gramp has to sight it in, of course...then he rediscovers just how much fun that old single shot .22 was !

Well Ironglow, now take a nice glass, LARGE glass,  of RICH chocolate milk, put in a scoop of ice cream and then add a shot, or two, or three or... of foo-foo brand chocolate liquor and then another scoop of ice cream, stir a bit and then umm , umm , good.

I have , in the past, not to far past, taken quite warm or even just short of boiling water, add chocolate syrup, or at times just unsweetened cocoa, a healthy shot of cooking chocolate liquor (which is actually chocolate liquor without sugar)  and after that is well mixed,  a lot of ice cream, some times chocolate, in a large container and stir it till the ice cream is mostly melted, or a slush, which often comes to a LOT of ice cream and then drink it.
I have come to have an odd liking of chocolate slush made with hot water rather than milk or cream, it gives it a sharp edge.
If you take that slush, or slop, and put it in the freezer till it starts to solidify, it is like a chocolate frosty, with a bit of an alcohol snap.
On a hot summer day, a wonderful treat.

Hey Bob...there you go again; making some very tempting suggestions.  I never tried some of those tricks with chocolate syrup...but I will do it now!  Hmmm, maybe some sweet chocolate syrup on that cold cereal, in place of the pancake syrup!
I'm looking forward to getting some of that good, old Hershey's syrup !

Hershey's syrup along with regular pancake syrup is loaded with sugar. I use sugar free, 15 calories per half cup, of fake maple syrup when I have pancakes or waffles which is seldom and avoid the Hershey's. It helps in the clothing department as I don't have to buy larger stuff. The fake syrup tastes good and it's almost as thin as real maple syrup.
