Good low light open sights for hunting?
« on: February 25, 2004, 03:32:56 PM »
Well guys I guess I have come full circle when it comes to pistol hunting. My first pistol is a Ruger SBHH in 44mag and I scoped it and worked up some 200gr XTP loads that shot really well. After 500 rounds in the last few months, considerable reading, studying, and reading the posts on this forum, I have come full circle on my handgun philosophy. I worked up some loads using 300 RNFPGC cast bullets and have some 325gr Beartooth bullets on order.Tonight I took the scope off  and the pistol just feels right, I don't know why but for some reason it just feels natural. Now I am looking for some good quality aftermarket sights that will give me some good low light visiability. Even though last year was the first year I ever carried a pistol deer hunting and I didn't score I can tell you there is just something about carrying a pistol that makes deer hunting special for me, just like bowhunting. Well thanks for letting as new pistol nut ramble on.

Thanks,
Erick

I'v read good things about this one http://www.bowenclassicarms.com/shop/default.asp?action=_top&category=6
on a couple boards(I think this board also) and may give it a try. I like their target sight too,it looks like the notch is narrower than Rugers. If you want to go Tritium, ashley makes them, I have one of their ghostring sets on my 45/70 and they put out quality stuff.

best all around sights ive found are a bowen rear and a post front thinned to .10. I dont care for the colared front sights they wash out in bright light and dont do much good in low light. With a thinned front you allow more light to show between the rear and the front sights and it also gives a more percise sight sight pic in good light.

I put a SDM fiber in green on my 500 S&W-- Believe me --it will not  'wash out' For the SBH- I just dont know what would work. This ole girl from texas works fine, but She has yet to be used in any real 'low light"
