30/40 Krag

I am getting a barrel in a trade. It is a rechambered 30 Herret to 30/40 Krag. Anyone here ever had one of these? What load did you use and how does it compare to other 30 caliber ctgs.

Hey John.
  I dont mean to pry too much, but you are the only guy to reply so far.
I dont have any reference to 30/40 Krag in a 14" barrel. I do have info on a rifle barrel though. Its for a 24" with a 130 gr bullet, the highest velocity with a IMR powder is around 2500 fps. We will use the 3031 example that uses 42.0 grs.  I look over at 30/30 and see a 130 with IMR 3031 a charge of 35 grs nets 2400 fps.  Both are 24" barrels.  So I ask what is the benefit of the 30/40 over the 30/30. I already have a 14" 30/30 barrel and if the Krag doesnt net me more energy then I probably should look at getting rid of it and trying something else.  What do you think?  Let me know. thanks Cliff

I love it !!!  I rechambered it from a 6 Groove 30/30 bbl. and it is the most accurate barrel that I have ever had, bar NONE!

I too have a 30-06 15" non-brake barrel what  load are you using ? I'm using 57grs of IMR4350 and a 150gr Hornady.

I grew up shooting deer with an old 1896 Krag. I seen a Contender at my favorite gun shop  that was a SSK rechamber of a 6 groove 30 Herrett in a super 14 with a SSK brake and TSOB(this barrel was the start of a real bad illness called "contenderitis") It shoots factory 180gr Rem Core-locs really well!! I've reloaded a bunch for it and I use 150gr Hornady's with H322 for hunting deer. It drops- :grin: em in their tracks. The only drawback to my barrel is that I can't get 200 or 220's to fly good out it. I have loaded 178gr Match bullets that touch holes at 100yds. It takes some time but it will shoot when you find the right load!

So anyone else have any opinions on this subject.  I am thinking of taking a 35 Remington barrel instead. Is there enough difference between the 30/40 and the 30/30 to warrant having them both. I am sure there is enough between the 35 and the 30/30.  What do you guys think?

 I have Super 14" barrels in both calibers.  The .30/40  barrel is a rechamber of a .30-30 and has been Magnaported.  The .35 Rem barrel is one of the most accurate I own.  Both have accounted for a few Missouri whitetails and both have done an excellent job.  The deer don't know the difference.  The .30/40 is obviously a bit flatter shooting. It is getting a bit harder to find brass for the .35 Rem these days than for the .30/40 Krag.  In my view, both are excellent.  You pays your money and makes your choice, or maybe you get both, as I did.  Caleath, I sent you a private message with some loading data for the Krag.

Ok so now I have got both a 30/40 and a 35Remington.  Man things are gettin crazy.   Anyone got good loads for the 35?   I would like to look at the 30/40  more too.

Caleath, IÂ’ve got a fond spot in my heart for the ‘ol 35 Rem as I cut my teeth” from a Contender aspect w/ this cartridge.  :wink: I killed 6 whitetail deer w/ it before I decided I wanted something that was a little flatter shooting than the 35. Ended up w/ a 6.5 JDJ that has performed very well through the years. Although IÂ’ve recently tried calibers other than the 6.5,  IÂ’ve yet to go back to the 35. Given time, I may try it again someday. It certainly killed deer very well, but the 6.5 killed just as well w/ less recoil and a better trajectory. That having been said, if I were to resume hunting w/ the 35 Remington, IÂ’d use what ended up being my favorite load (MAX LOAD, so reduce accordingly and work up safely): W/W brass/180 gr Hornady SSP/H322 41.0 grains/Fed 210 primer/OAL 2.645”. My records donÂ’t indicate this bullets relation to the lands. Muzzle velocity was 2140 fps. ItÂ’s been 11 years since I loaded for the 35 Rem so you might check w/ the Hodgdon folks as powder specs/max loads do change over time. I also killed a few deer w/ the Hornady 200 gr SP, but liked the 180 SSP better.  :-) Gary T.
