Stunts
« on: February 12, 2014, 01:39:46 AM »
There are post here about long range shooting of critters, there is talk of using small bore guns even 9mm handguns for deer hunting.
When do these attempts become stunts ? When is it no longer sporting or ethical ? nothing more than an attention grab !
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Deer are pretty easy to kill and there is no shortage.  If it blows your skirt up, it's legal, and no meat is wasted I guess It's none of my business.  Personally I like them close and I normally use a .30-06 or a .45-70.

If it went as you suggest it would be fine but it not always happens that way.

There are two TV programs on now that glory in that type of hunting if it isn't a scam.
The last one I saw had a young lad shootingh at a bull elk from an elevated position to a Laser measured 800+ yards( I think I got the Range right).
The shot rang out and a few seconds later the bull dropped and didn't move a foot.

BS on that.

I have gone to 243 or smaller
When hunting Deer and Hog
 I take no body shots
If they can't be hit in the Mellon
I let them walk

I gun hunt very selective shots or None

And more like a bow hunt
I used too whack up in the bread basket or anywhere else I knew they would go down
I have grown far from those days
Wish I hunted as I do now my whole life

My question on ethics comes from bow hunting.   It's estimated that 75% of deer shot with an arrow are not recovered.

That's because most of them don't die.

i'm afraid a lot of hunting these
days (in my area) has evolved
into bragging rights. postings
on web pages, youfloob, farcebook,
etc.
it's got to the point the state of texas
has antler restrictions over most
of the state so folks can kill a "book"
deer to post or brag about. a lot
of it has to do with money spent,
"hunting" videos, "hunting" television
shows, etc.
it's turned into a big mess as far as
i'm concerned.

I support antler restrictions.

i don't have a problem with folks
who want big antlers. they have a
problem with me because i don't care
either way. a big rack doesn't make a
trophy. i'd just shoot does if i were
allowed to other than just one weekend
a year. i don't feel the state should
be in the antler growing business.
they should first and foremost be
concerned with deer herd health,
not superior antler producing genetics.

If you shoot every button buck that comes along there aren't going to be any mature deer.  If you just want meat shoot does.  5 does to one buck is a good ratio.

A lot of states alow shooting does now but not in the numbers Swampy recommends. It's really not how many are shot its the buck-doe ratio that produces healther deer herds.  ;)

Shooting buck to doe ratio depends on area and population. We have DMAP and it requires a min size area of land. The first few years you shoot does unlimited along with button bucks . Then you start keeping a record of every deer shot adjusting the ratio as needed. Also bucks seldom stay in the area of their birth. Rack size limits can be good IF scrub racks are taken out also. Why pass poor genes.
Bragging rights has cause some problems all of us see it. Shame .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !
