How do you sight through off-set scope mounts?
« on: February 09, 2014, 11:48:38 AM »
Dear Guys,

I am seeing a fair number of the old cheaper bolt actions come back at the gun shows, such as the Savage 340 in .30-30.  It has a split receiver, so only a mount that bolts on the side of the receiver will work.  Even with these mounts, it appears that it never does center the scope tube directly over the top of the receiver, but about 3/4 of an inch to one side (the left side.).

How is a person suppose to  "square -up" the scope reticle, and then actually look through a scope like this, when it is offset?     Are you suppose to rotate the rifle sideways in your hands so that the scope goes in front of your eye?  Doesn't this twist the buttstock in your shoulder?  Or maybe your suppose to rock your head to the left, away from the cheekpiece, to see through the scope?  But that would rob you of your cheekweld.

Thanks for any info.

Some rifles are simply best with open sites. ;)

I know its probably not the answer you wanted...

Use a slip on cheekrest or a slip on elastic shell carrier with a pad under it.  Or a stick on pad like shotgunners use to raise the comb.

With the Savage 340 it doesn't take a whole lot (a lot less than a Win 94 with a side mount).

i have a savage 340 with the off set scope mount. i dont find it a problem at all. it has a nice 4x burris scope mounted on it.its small scope and it lends to the rifles light and easy handling capabilities. its a very nice quick handlng gun and you really dont notice the offset in the scope. i dont have any pads or anything on the stock.

the gun was also very easy to site in.and its prob one of the most accurate rifles i own with with 125 grain horn spire points.it also shoots 100 grn horn short jacket bullets just as well. it also shoots any factory flat or round nose bullets well. however i dont think the mag will take 150 grn pointed bullets as they are too long.but i could be wrong its been awhile since i tried them. the leverloution bullets mite work.

a buddy picked up a savage 325 30-30 at a gun show for 275$, from a guy walking around. i thought it was a good price as it had the side mount whick is 50$ and a decent scope. i would of took it if he didnt even tho i didnt need it. the 325 is just a bit older model of the 340. sometimes they need  a bit wood relieved on the left side of the receiver to let the scope mount work. this rifle had already had that done and a refinished stock.

the only other bolt rifle in a 30-30 i know of is the rem in 788 i think.its a bit better rifle than the savage but much more rare and not any more accurate.i think the scope mounts directly over the bore on it.

either of these rifles are a good choice if you want a nice rifle in 30-30 and can get them worth the money.

A lot depends on the shape of your face and your shooting style.

For someone with a "round" face and heavy jowls, or someone who shoots with a "heads-up" style with a light cheek weld it probably won't be any problem at all.

Conversely, someone with a slim face who prefers a "heads-down", firm cheek weld will probably struggle a little with a scope slightly offset to the side.
