Update on Matt's latest stroke.
« on: June 13, 2013, 09:34:37 AM »
I have some additional details now on Matt.

He was driving back from them taking the kids to Six Flags when he started looking pale and stressed. Heather told him to pull over and let her drive. He pulled over and then blacked out. Her and Blake apparently got him into the passenger side and she began driving.

When he woke he wanted to know what he was doing in the passenger side. He had no memory of what had taken place or how he got there. He was taken to the hospital emergency room when they got back to Anniston. He stayed there until about 1:00 AM as they monitored his heart.

This is the second time within about a week he has had a mild stroke and a long time ago he fell when he was working in a trailer he was reworking with plans to rent it out. He was paralazed and unable to move for an extended period but he doesn't know how long and none of us even knew he was there working. That was several years ago. He eventually was able to move then got up and got himself home.

I'm not certain of his current condition but he's not doing any work for now and is resting.

Sorry to hear that about Matt. I'll keep him and Heather in my prayers Bill. Sometimes these early events can be for the better. Get a handle on it before it becomes even more serious.
Not to downplay the seriousness of these small strokes he's been having.Keep us informed, and give him our best.   Brad

Prayers sent. Do you know if he suffers from a heart arrhythmia ? That is the number one cause of strokes , especially at his age.

I pray that Matt is doing okay.   I and others spent sometime taking a co-worker back and forth to doctor appointments after a major stroke.

More time for emergency stroke treatment? May 28, 2009 | 1:30 pm
Stroke patients who reach the hospital within three hours of experiencing symptoms can be treated with a drug that breaks up blood clots and restores blood flow, potentially sparing precious brain tissue from damage. Current guidelines state that the drug, called tissue plasminogen activator, or tPA, must be given within three hours. A study published today in the journal Stroke, however, suggests that the three-hour window may be too narrow.
Researchers at Stanford University and colleagues in Germany and Belgium have shown that treatment can help patients up to 4.5 hours after the first symptoms appear. The study is published online in the journal Stroke. The researchers combined data from four large clinical trials on tPA. Among a total of 1,622 patients who arrived at the hospital between three and 4.5 hours, treatment with tPA improved their odds of a favorable outcome by 31%. A favorable outcome was defined as returning to normal or having only minimal residual symptoms, such as some numbness.
With 750,000 Americans suffering a stroke each year, expanding the recommendation for tPA for up to 4.5 hours could help a large number of people, said the lead author of the study, Maarten Lansberg, an assistant professor of neurology and neurological sciences at Stanford.
"We've known that this treatment works for ischemic stroke since 1995," Lansberg said in a news release. "But in the United States, only about 3% of stroke patients end up getting treated. Most of them are ineligible because they come to the hospital after the three-hour time window."
The Food and Drug Administration has approved tPA for use in the first three hours after stroke symptoms begin. But doctors can use the medication after that three-hour window as an "off-label" indication.
For more information on the symptoms of stroke, treatment of stroke as an emergency and other information, see this Web page from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

The ER staff Doctor would not give me TPA because I could not tell him the exact time of the stroke.....he got to watch me slowly become paralized on my left side.  Heck it was a Sat., they even had to send my scans from TX to Hawaii to be read......go figure.

Prayers sent.  He might have to take an asprin every day to keep his blood thin or even get on something like Plavix.  I had a heart attack Feb 25, had to put in two stints.  Doc said everything else looked fine.  My bp shot up to 180 something over 120 something with pain in left shoulder and arm.  Head felt like it was coming off.  I'm supprised I didn't stroke out at that bp.  I immediately took two asprins, chewed them and let them settle under my tongue.  Also took two bp pills, one lisenopril and one metoprolol, and PRAYED.  In about 5 minutes it quit, but I felt exausted, but wife took me to doc, who put me in the hospital.  Nurse said most people with the numbers I have shouldn't be standing.  God kept me alive, not finished with my work in this world yet.  I have lost about 25 lbs since then, exercise more, and am trying to loose another 25.  I was 232lbs when it happened.  My goal is 185.  Matt is too young for this to be happening.  He needs to get a handle on this now, and get serious with prevention.

Matt has now convinced himself they were not really strokes in spite of the stroke like symptoms he experienced. He has a badly abscessed tooth that has been giving him trouble a good long while.

He visited his dentist friend who gave him a prescription for penicillin and he has been taking it. He says he is now feeling much better. Today he said a lot of the poison in that abscess drained out and he is feeling much better after that. His dentist told him the poison in that abscessed tooth is running thruout his body and that is most likely the real cause of the stroke like symptoms he has been experiencing. I hope it's that simple, time will tell.

Yes we pray that its just the abscess, that caused the problems. I have read that the poison from an abscessed tooth running through your body can cause all kinds of problems. Wishing and praying the best for Matt.

Hope Matt recovers quickly, being a young fella hopefully he will!!  8)  Sepsis /septic shock is bad stuff, I'm attending a funeral of an 87yr old lady next week that just died of it and its complications this morning, she was relatively healthy until last Monday, went down hill from there.  :(  Us old guys (over 65) are 13 times more susceptible to dying from it than younger fellas, so don't ignore the symptoms.

Thanks for the update Bill,

Tim

Prayers for Matt. As far as infections in the teeth, last July, I had my left hip replaced. I had 2 teeth removed a month before the surgery, and both the sergeon, and my dentist insisted to have antibiotics around. If I have trouble with my teeth, take some before going in to the dentist. Nothing to mess with. gypsyman

I know because of my long history of coronary artery disease, before I have dental work done I am given a round of antibodics as a precaution.

I hope Matt doesn't self diagnos but follows up with the doctors.
