Pneumonia at 63 Sucks! But just barely.
« on: June 13, 2013, 04:44:11 AM »
About 2 1/2 weeks ago I was in a bad dust storm in the Texas Panhandle. Couldn't leave and was in it for about 13 hours. Next day? Cough! It continued to get worse, and I'm thinkin: Sinus infection maybe? I did the usual stuff and nothing worked.
Monday I went to my doctor with it, it had gotten worse. And while I was at it I let her check a wrist I had hurt about 3 weeks ago. I got pneumonia, and I had tore a ligament in my wrist. Twice! Ain't old age fun? Answer: Sometimes.

I hope you get over it quickly.
I have a problem with allergies and it would lead to pneumonia , can't remember how many times I have had it but it has taken a toll over the last 40 years.
Then there was the super pneumonia Legionnaires disease that was really bad , got it working on a cooling tower

I've never had it before, and don't want it again. I think I can see a difference every day since I went to the doctor. It didn't get as bad as could have I guess, but it is not something I want to do anymore.

It is very painful at any age between 16 and 58 the years I have research for. I have had it so bad I had to go to the Dr. each day to have a nurse beat on my back to help break it up. Then they showed the wife how to do it , think she enjoyed it.

My father told me once--You know what is golden about the golden years -- not one damn thing!

My right knee has problems from years of landscaping and kneeling on crushed granite with bare knees, plus I hit it with a two pound hammer some twenty years ago.

It is the oddest thing as it is  never serious pain, but when I get careless and do not use some form of knee pad or brace, when it goes bad, it is as if that knee can short circuit the entire body.
My ankles are stiff, when ever I stand up, not just the right one but both, and I can not squat without forcing myself to do it.

The best way to fix it, is to take a one-by and put  it on the side of the knee and hit it with a hammer, then the stiffness goes and it is as if I just relieved a whole body ache.

I have never had pneumonia and may God speed your healing, but I got bronchitis for the first time since I was twelve years old a couple of years back.
It brought back all the bad memories.

I had pnumonia twice back in the 90's.  Got nasal surgery and took alergy shots for several years.  Now they have a pnumonia shot that lasts about 5 years.  I got one a couple of years ago.  I get a flu shot every year.  Now I hardly ever get sick, not even a cold in the winter.  With the bad allergies, I got rid of carpet and put down hardwood and tile flooring.  Put the cats outside, use a hepa filter in the forced air systems.  Also, avoid the foods I am supposed to be allergic to.  Feel much better, breathe much better.  I use a mask when cutting grass, painting, fixing something under the house, etc.  Not always comfortable with one, but I avoid getting sick.  I am supposed to be allergic to peanuts, and I love parched peanuts, peanut butter, and Reeces cups.  Had to give them up.  Also alergic to crab? which I hardly ever ate.  Take care, and check into getting the pnumonia shots.

I am praying for you young man, that is nasty stuff. I think they call the kind from dust/other contaminants "Chemical Pneumonia", it may be worse than bacterial. I have had what they called "walking pneumonia" when I was a young oilfield worker down in the rainforest of SE Texas! Only reason I was "walking" was I couldn't afford to take off and go the hospital ( economic slave back then!) They would load me up with shots/pills and I'd keep trucking, although I would sometimes have to take a few days off for bed rest. Take it slow when you go back to work; they can't fire you for being slow, but they CAN hire someone to take your place after you die, so take care of DEE!  :-*

I got mine at my regular doctor visit.  Cost $25 co-pay.  He said to get one every 5 years.  Helps prevent bacterial pnumonia.  I think Dees was "Chemical or environmental" pnumonia.  Only way to prevent that is wear a dust mask, or chemical mask.  In the distant past, people who got pnumonia, probably half would die from it.  Today with antibiotics and shots, a week to 10 days and you are over it.  I would rather live in the past, but with todays medicine.

Have you all considered getting the PneumoVax (pneumonia vaccine)?

it doesnt cover ALL the possible bugs that can cause pneumonia(*), but it covers a bunch of the most common ones.

Always better to be immune and not ever get sick than to have to fight it off, i say.

C-

(*) and if it was from a dust storm, it could well have been fungal and not bacterial- though fungal pneumonias are very serious so you probably would knwo if it was.

p.s. glad your recovery was quick and uneventful.

Well, the gulf coast was kind enough to send up a bunch of humidity last night, and today it's hot and humid, and I can't hardly breath outside. Wife says sit down. Think I will.

I have asbestos in both lungs, lost 1/3rd of my left lung in Lebanon.  VA gives me a pneumonia shot when they say I need one.  So far my breathing has been OK, no problems.  They give me chest X-Rays on a regular basis.

It's the heart and arthritis that is the problems.  But I'm still plugging away.  Leaving Wednesday to drive to Montana.  Then I'll be keeping a 13 year old busy for a month.

Spent 10 days in the hospital with pneumonia a year ago and almost went down with it this year. The wife scored me some antibiotics in a dose pack or I would have went down.

Hope you take care of yourself Dee, That stuff will kill ya. Everytime a grandchild shows up with a runny nose here I get sick and I'm sure pneumonia will be on my death certificate. Getting old aint for sissies!

Take it easy! Listen to Dr Wife ;) I've dealt with pneumonia twice now, and the last time was a bear! After quad Bi-pass I was in the hosp a total of 40 days. Pancreatitis! Then later pneumonia. Took about a month of treatments to finally kick it. The last shot of antibiotics was so big, they gave me a shot to deaden the area where the needle went in. It did the job, and I don't miss taking my pneumonia shot every 5 yrs now.

It's nothing to play with............Keep on top of it.

I feel your pain Dee. I've had it twice within a 2 year span in my teenage years believe it or not. I made it worse by not telling my mother until it was real bad. I remember coughing so hard that I'd throw up.
