I shot mine about 8 times yesterday with the supplied .670 choke.  Winchester and Federal High Velocity #5's.  20 and 30 yards were OK, not so hot at 40 at all.  I had to adjust the rear sight all the way down to get it on target and it still is a fuzz high.  I am going to pick up an aftermarket choke today or tomorrow and try it again (.660 or .675 Rhino, depends on whether I try the Hevi Shot or not)

PS Bring your shoulder pads with you, this puppy kicks like a mule on steroids.  The first shot knocked my muffs off my head!

Paul, please continue to keep us posted on your progress.  I have one of these barrels too and have yet to shoot it.  Planning to this week and will add my 2 cents worth when I know something.

Hey guys..

I have had great results with the Rem Hevishot #5's and the T/C choke.   I recently installed a sims recoil pad that I got from DandR sports for $23 bucks..which is a great price!   You still feel a helluva shove but it doesnt hurt like it used to.  I actually shot it today out to 58 yards and would actually think of taking a shot that far if only I could see more than 40-lol!

Hey Chris...I too am thinking of a red dot sight and was looking at the sightron with the 4 different reticle choices, one of which seems perfect for turkeys.

I think a red dot is the only way to go since the mount screws are under the rear sight and I dont know of a scope that has that much eye relief.

Thanks Chris..I havent seen that.   You'd think TC would let us know.  Could you tell me where you saw that?

I tell ya, it surprises me though cause it shoots so well with it in their choke.   Did the articles say there is a problen using # 6's do you know??

I too have the turkey barrel and in the book it says "lead shot only" for the choke.  I also saw a sign at Cabela's that said "hevi-shot should not be fired thru any choke tighter than .675".  

Anyway, I have tried Federal Grand Slam 3", 1 7/8oz  load of #5's.  On a Premos target I put 175 pellets into the target (11 1/2" across) with 56 into the center (5 1/2") at 30 yrds with a red dot sight.  I put mine on with a twist.  I took a standard Warne mount and installed it forward on the barrel-instant scout scope/red dot/tukey guide gun.

The funny thing is I called Rhino yesterday (turkey gun gurus) and they recommend a .660 choke for Win HV #5's (my preference).  I asked them what choke if I chose to try Hevi-Shot?  Same choke .660!  Every choke I see made specifically for Hevi-Shot is a .675, so the T/C choke is very, very close.  I am unsure of the materials it is constructed of though (tube), therein could be the problem with shooting Hevi-Shot.  I think a lot of the WARNINGS are just for liability reasons, I have shot it through some pretty tight chokes with no problems.  It just doesn't pattern very good in too tight of a constriction.  I have my sight all the way bottomed out and my pattern is still a little high, I may be forced to put a scope on mine after all.

Fellas,
I called TC service the other day and asked specifically about shooting Hevi-Shot through their turkey barrel with the choke tube they supply with the barrel.  The lady assured me it was perfectly safe and that many hunters are using it.  
Also, I took my barrel to my gunsmith for a forcing cone job.  He thought the steel thickness in that area was a little skimpy.  I think I read in an earlier thread that someone else had the forcing cone lengthened and was pleased with the results.  If anyone has had any negative effects from this adjustment to the Encore turkey barrel I'd really appreciate the info.

its funny you mentioned that now because I was researching the Encore thru the web and there was an article involving Brenda Valentine who uses the Encore...and Hevishot.

I also checked the Encore choke tube with a caliper and a Star Dot tube that can be used with Hevishot and the choke diameter was the same.

Thanks for some good news cause Hevishot 5's work great with my Encore.

I took mine to Rhino and they lengthened the forcing cone and polished the cone/bore and put a .660 Rhino choke in it.  Super shooter now with HV Win #6's.  I'm getting around 140 hits at 40 yards and close to 70 at 50 yards in a 10" circle.  When I shot those patterns it was actually hitting about 2" low and 1.5" to the right at 20 yards.  It could be a little better than that now.  I smoked two longbeards in South Carolina yesterday with it.  Not pretty.  I feel it is worth the money to put your mind at ease about how your gun is shooting.  Mine didn't like the Hevi Shot and the guys at Rhino recommended the HV #6's to me.  Working so far.  BTW I put a Nikon Monarch turkey pro on it and love it too.

Fellas,
Thought some of you might be interested.
Got my turkey barrel back from the smith.  Had the forcing cone work done and tried #6 Hevi-shot today.  Using the choke tube TC sends with their barrel, and using a Hunter Specialties turkey target I was getting 8 to 10 pellets in the brain/vertebra every time at 40 yards.  I shot 8 rounds.  
Thats far better than the first time I patterned it (pre-forcing cone work) with my usual Federal #6 2 oz. copper plated turkey loads.  That first outing only had 3 to 4 pellets in the head/vertebra area at 35 yards.  
Pretty interesting how a little experimenting can make such drastic changes.  
I'm ready to give some turkey a headache.

Have you tried the copper plated #6's since you got it back?  Mine is a shooter now with the forcing cone work and a Rhino .660 choke!

I thought about that (shooting the 6's) after I posted.  I'll do that and post the outcome.  That should test the forcing cone theory verses just using hevi-shot.

OK fellas, results are in.  I only had two Fed. #6 copper plated turkey loads left.
 
Using Hunter specialalties turkey target, first shot at 35 yds.  Before forcing cone job, 3-4 hits brain/vertebrae.  After forcing cone job, 7 hits in brain/vertebra.  That alone justifies the smith work.  
Second shot with the Federal 6's at 40 yards.  4 hits brain/vertebra.  
The federal shells are 2 oz. while the HS shells are 1 1/2 oz.
 
Hevi shot put roughly twice the killing pellets in the kill zone with less shot and less recoil.  

These results are in my Encore.  I suppose results will vary between barrels and different tubes.  

When I first tried this turkey barrel, I wasn't very impressed.  Because I read here someone had the barrel's forcing cone lengthened with good results, I had it done.  Thanks for the info.

I guess that is why they tell you to try different shot sizes in every gun!  My Encore with the supplied choke didn't do too good at all.  With the work and the Rhino choke it is a killer for sure with HV #6's.  It still doesn't like the Hevi Shot for some reason.  No matter it is knocking 'em in the dirt like it is.  Glad you got yours shooting like you want it.

So true....mine shoots great with Hevishots 5 and 6's and Win HV 5's.

I was actually kinda hoping they wouldnt shoot well with the hevishot at the price they are LOL!
