Of those choices - the .270 would be fine for Elk and have less kick.  Nothing wrong with buying a new gun but have you put a quality recoil pad on the 300?  If you reload(or want to start), you can reduce the power on the 300 to 30-06 power/recoil.

Montana Arms :  I have both a 270 and a 30-06 and the one I will always have is a 30-06 you can take about anything with it, the 270 is also a vary fine cartridge, but the old 06 will always have a home here. :D   JIM

montana arms- azshooter gave you some great advice! I've got an M700 SS BDL in .300RUM and the very first thing I did was to install a Decelerator recoil pad on it! Tames it down to a point where it's not bad to shoot off the bench! :o I've got them on all of my larger caliber rifles! Also try a P.A.S.T shoulder pad, this also takes some of the wack out of the big magnums! If it bothers you when you shoot while hunting you can also sew one of these P.A.S.T shoulder pads inside your hunting coat. If you reload you can reduce the loads to 06 levels and then increase them a little at a time until you find one that's comfortable for you to shoot. You really don't want to develop a flinch when you fire your rifle, that's even tougher to cure!  :-)   Good luck! CEJ..
If I can't take my rifles with me, I don't want to go!

I think everyone is on target. Sims recoil pad will really tame it down plus a PAST shoulder pad will really help.. Also, a lot of recoil is due to improper shooting form off the bench. You can really affect recoil by how you set up your rifle on the bags. A rear bag will also help position and slow down the recoil as well. Front bag height needs to be such you are not bent over into the butt of stock so your shoulder can absorb the recoil versus stopping it. You have to think of recoil and your shoulder as a shock absorber. The more you can set up your rifle so your body can "absorb" the recoil versus trying to stop it, the less felt recoil you will "enjoy". If you are bent over into the butt of the stock and stiffen your shoulder....OUCH! Basically, you want to be somewhat vertical in your shoulder placement so it has a chance to absorb the recoil. Your head will track back with your shoulder as well so the scope doesn't bite you. If you are bent over into the butt stock, you head cannot track back which is not a good thing with heavy recoiling rifles.. I have some smiley marks on my forehead from slug guns to prove that one out. :) This translates into higher front bag setups than most folks will do. Anyway, you may want to try this as well. Or shoot off cross sticks so the recoil is again absorbed by the shoulder and not stopped by it. I tried to describe how to reduce benched recoil but it may not be as clear as it could be but hopefully you get the gist of it. The LSS is a nice rifle to shoot and I would bet if you dropped down in bullet weight to 165's, it will become a lot more tamer as well. Plus as a 300 WM you will also have the extra juice if you need it versus maybe one day wishing you had it to use. Good luck!

Check out the VAIS brake.  I have them on every rifle  I own that is bigger than a 270.
All brakes are not the same, some of them will rip your ears off.  The Vais is not as loud as the rest, but will still give you the recoil reduction that you are looking for.
No, I don't work for VAIS, I just like their brakes.

try a 308-realistically anything inside 300 yards not alot of difference-past that not much til you get to 500 except drop-lighter gun, much easier to shoot well, and will kill anything in north america inside reasonable hunting distances, lots of bullet choices, good varmint gun with 110gr bullets, less expensive to shoot.

fear the man who has one gun-because he is very familiar with it-you can have a 308 and do everything there is to do with just one gun.

try one-i believe you will like it-anyone else agree ??

Montana,

The nice thing about those 300 Win large magnum cases is that you can load them down to duplicate the performance of the smaller 30 cals.  Nothing says you have to use that much powder.  You can turn it into a .308 or 30/06 with just an adjustment in the powder.  However you can't go the other way and turn the .308 or 30/06 into the 300 Mag.

My preference is the cartridges based on the /06 case, but I am getting the itch to pick up a 300 Win Mag Encore heavy barrel sometime.

There is no such thing as a complete gun safe that doesn't have a .30-06 inside.  Lawdog

Think twice before you invest in a muzzle brake. While it reduces the recoil, it increases the noise to a level beyond anyone can handle. At the range you are protected by ear muffs. Other will not sit near you when you shoot because of the noise and gas blowby.  I had the BOSS option on my Browning .243 that I switched to the conventional option beacuse it bothered other folks too much at the club.

Will you use ear muffs during hunting? Search the site for "muzzle brake", "BOSS" etc before investing.

montana -

The cheapest and easiest solution is a sllip-on recoil pad. I use a Kick-Killer pad I got from Cabelas on my Marlin 1895 .45-70.  My "Rhino Blaster" loads push a 460g hardcast to 1812fps and generate 48 pounds recoil, over half again what you should be getting in a .300 Win Mag with 180g bullets.  The Kick Killer tames the recoil to a point where I can shoot these loads as much as I want.

Of course, I cheated and stuffed an extra 1/2" of foam inside the pad before slipping it on.

You could always reload to .30-06 or .308 levels and still have an excellent deer/elk rifle.  I would stay away from brakes, but that is based on personal experience and preferences.
