« on: May 21, 2013, 02:08:42 PM »
Rabbits are feasting on my garden and the last bb gun I had was a daisy red ryder that the kids used.
I have no idea about whats what in the pellet gun world.
So what gun would you folks recommend for rabbits at 10-20 yards ?
I Would like to keep cost under $100.

The 177 caliber top break 1000 fps rifles work well.I think the Ruger on most big box sporting goods stores have it for about $100
A crossman 760 or a Daisy 880 or other models that pump  with a rifled barrel that shoot pellets work well at that range.
A CO2 model will be easier and will not make the Clicks that the pumps will to get it to full range.
Any of the pellet designs or even the lead BB's will work.  The Lead BB's may be faster as you can fill the resovoir wiht them and shake them in.
But I just use the 22Rifle with CB longs and they are quiet.  At one point a neighbor stuck his head over the fence and asked what Daisey BB gun I was shooting when I had CB longs in a Henry.

I just use the 22Rifle with CB longs and they are quiet.  At one point a neighbor stuck his head over the fence and asked what Daisey BB gun I was shooting when I had CB longs in a Henry.

I use to have a tin like a shoe polish can full of those little cb rounds .
The old man had them years ( 50)  ago.
Never had much use for them .
But now that I live in town I could put them to use.
But have you bought  any of them lately?
Cheapest I seen was $100 for a 1000!!!
For that price it is cheaper to buy a new pellet gun.
Hmmmm,,,,,Anyone ever pull a 22 lr and dump half the powder out?  :o
Headed to the cellar for some testing. ;)

But the 22LR is a heeled bullet.  How are you going to get it back in?
Aguilla has two different loads that use a 20 grain pellet one wiht just the primer in the rim and the other has double the primer material.
I used to use the first out od the Bisley revolver to shoot Mice in the garage, the BB gun had the things winging all around the garage once going through  the mouse but the pellet was perfect.  The pellet out of the pistol killed a few rabbits as well.  But the pellet got caught under the front sight of my CZ  and the Supers were not real powerfull but very quiet, the CB was the best for power and accuracy.  Plus the CB longs feed fro mthe mag of the CZ, so I had a 5 shot 22 Pellet +P rifle for small game that was quiet.
And At $10 for 100 it does not seem too bad to get rid of a few rabbits,  unless you have over 100 rabbits

I'd recommend a Chinese B3, available though Amazon for maybe $60 in .22. They are rock solid, strong, and accurate. Get one, clean off the yak butter, and start shooting--- you might need a red dot sight, because the rear sights are pretty bad. AND, there are LOTS of people who can help you with any problems on any of the bigger airgun forums.
If you give up, THEY don't have to win.

Rabbits kill EASY! I shot dozens with a Beeman Hurricane .177 pistol... its is barely 400fps. ;)  Just gotts hit your target!

That 40$ 760 will do the trick and EVERYONE needs a 760 anyway!  ::)

The Crosman Optimus in .22 caliber would be a good rifle for your budget. A little over $100.oo but comes with a pretty decent 4x32 scope. scout4

I'll second this choice, along with the lesser expensive crosman Phantom(walmart, 80.00), they're a good bit more powerful than most of the other choices mentioned but unlike the 760(smoothbore), B3 and some other models mentioned, they have enough accuracy and power to cleanly take squirrels, crows and other garden raiders. As a kid i remember my 760 would easily take a rabbit but would never kill a squirrel. Plus theres no pumping and with some practice you can get off a 2nd shot pretty quick.  J

the QB78 suggested earlier is a good suggestion...in 177 or 22

If you can find one of the Russian guns cheap and their ammo is cheap. It works but won't win any beauty contest.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !
