The winter that just won't go away
« on: May 16, 2013, 07:55:20 AM »
My gosh here it is the 16th of May, and we still got snow on the ground.  Granted not as much as we had two weeks ago, but it's still there.  Temps last week never got above freezing.  Monday it stayed in the 20s all day, then it warmed up some on Tuesday and yesterday into the low 40s.  Now they are calling for more snow tomorrow and Saturday.

Monday I drove up to the Yukon River.  My Bear Baiting site is still snowed in.  There is a five foot drift blocking the trail near the highway.  I workeed my way around that drift and found others, two to four feet deep farther along the trail.  I should have had my bait in last week, but it will be another two weeks at least, if it warms up.

We are three weeks late putting out our Beaver sets, the river is still froze.  Ice along the shore is too rotten to try and walk on.

There for one week we were worried about flooding when the weather suddenly got warm.  Temps jumped into the 60s.  But then it dropped back down below freezing and stayed there for over a week.  I left my traps out in a box, under a spruce tree.  The box is still frozen down.  I opened it and removed the traps, but my canoe is frozen down as well.  None of the willows are budding out yet, they are three weeks late as well.  Gosh, I'm tired of ice.

Spring made a strong apperance 2 weeks ago, the snow packed roads burnt off leaving slush and huge melt pools the city was pumping off, Saturday the 11th clouds rolled in and it got cold and that siberian winds blowing in off the Bearing straights was really nippy, the rest the week was mostly cool with periods of snow sprinkling on & off throughout the week.

last night was snowing flakes the size of dimes, with 20mph winds, the winds picked up through the night and socked in everything.

I was plowing snow today, plowed the parking lot and couple residence drives, the last was drifted in so bad I couldnt close to the garage, it'll have to be rooted out with a front end loader.

Its forcasted to be cool and snow fall through sunday evening (May 19th)

Yea, our roads were finally clear.  Most are muddy, but the ice and snow was gone.  Now they are saying two to four inches Tomorrow night, with more Saturday.  Took the studded tires off yesterday.  Wife got her sports car out Monday.  Making her drive the S-10 tomorrow.

It's snowing the size of quarters.  Cars, porch, and grass, are covered.  Predicting 1 to 3 inches.  Tanana river is blocked by ice and Salcha flooding.  Winter Storm warning in effect through saturday.

Send some of it this way to Alabama. We're already hitting the 90's on some days. It will be Africa hot here before long.

Well the temp got up to 36 today.  Yesterday's snow is melting here in North Pole.   Down in the Park (Denali) all the tourist are stuck in their hotels.  They are plowing lots of heavy snow, just to keep the highway to Anchorage open.  The Park Road is closed again.  Ice Jam on the Yukon has backed ice and water up into the town of Eagle.  Seven houses have been damaged.  The Tanana has an ice jam that is flooding homes in the Salcha area just south of my place.  The Chena is still frozen.  By Tuesday we are supposed to be up in the 60s and staying above freezing at night, again.  We'll see.
