Winchester M70 vs. Browning A-BoltII.......
« on: February 21, 2004, 02:48:55 PM »
I'm looking for a little advice here.  I'm trying to decide on which .270 WSM I'm going to buy, and I can't decide between the Win. Featherweight and the A-Bolt.  For those of you out there that own one or the other, give me your opinions on which is better, and why.  I don't currently own a rifle of either make. I'm a Rem M700 shooter, but I don't really want to buy one of the ugly SPS 700's that Rem. is chambering for the .270 WSM, as I would like to have a new rifle that looks as good as it shoots..

Thanks!!!!

Having both the Winchester and the Browning there are cases for each but if you like something from the norm go with the A bolt short lift smaller action vs the rem 700. You wont be sorry

Thanks for the response, '06, I was beginning to wonder if I would get one.  I looked long and hard at an A-Bolt on Saturday.  That bolt throw is a bit different that the 700's I'm used to, but I think I could get used to it.

I like the short lift and a few other features of the Browning it has move up on the food chain as far as what gun goes out on a hunt. My gun is in 7-08 and will shoot from 7/8 to 1 1/2 inch groups all day in the heat, cold, rain, or shine. Good Luck and enjoy

I may get some flack for this, but as you might tell from my handle here I like "controlled feed" actions.  Get the Model 70.  Its the "riflemans rifle" and looks and feels like a classic.  It's design won't let you down, ever.

Actually you won't go wrong with either but my taste in all things runs towards the traditional: guns, values, and ladies.

One thing you didn't mention is the caliber - not that it would really matter.

I lean towards the Win M70.  I prefer it's lines and the feel over the Browning.  I don't think you would be disappointed in either, though.

I own an A-Bolt and absolutely love it. I like the lines on it and the shorter throw is nice. Another feature that is nice is the adjustable trigger. Just remove the trigger gaurd, turn a screw and it's done. I have mine in a 7mm Rem Mag and with hand loads get a ragged hole with my varmint load and under 3/4" with my deer loads. But I still have to refine my deer load so I think that will still tighten up some. You can't go wrong either way though. Handle both if you can find someone with them try shooting them if possible and make your decision from their.

Get the Browning---better made---definitely more accurate---better features.

The Browning is one of the better production guns----Remington and Winchester are the bottom feeders----as a matter of fact---I'd take a Ruger or Savage before I bought a Rem or Win.

Traded in all my cheapies and now own 2 Sako's and a Browning Acera-----but I've owned them all-----including Kimber and Cooper.
