Sauer 16x16/6.5x57R

Just kicked up this 1960's Sauer 16x16/6.5x57r.  I should have it next week.

Now that's a beauty Doug. I like it. Is that swing mounts on that scope? I have them on one of my drillings. You'll get a lot of use out of that one.

I have the swing mount on a Griefelt, we had to trough out the dovetail which was interfering with the front sight when using the shotguns.

Great looking gun.  What scope is that and what type of hunting do you plan to do with it?
I just picked up a 1968 JP Sauer in 7x57R/16ga.  Mine has the same high claw mounted scope a 6x42 Hertel & Ruess.I got it for hunting predators in bear and cougar country.  I have the components to put together nickle plated "F" Buckshot and picked up 6 boxes of Privi Partizan 139gr and 4 boxes of 173gr S&B.    It is very accurate with the 139gr and suprisingly prints the 173 to nearly the same spot with just a slightly larger group so I'll be able to use them interchangably with out haveing to resight.

The scope is an Eco, which I understand is the precursor to Schmidt & Bender.   The barrels are 60mm {23.5 inches)  the barrels are choked modified and full.    I am looking to use this as my goto overall ranch gun.  The MPBR for the 6.5x57r is about 260 yards.  I have a 22WMR insert which will make this perfect for raccoon, coyotes, opossum, Texas sized deer, I have to research hogs this might be a little light for hogs.


I took the drilling out tonight an was able to take a parasite bird.  The drilling carried very nicely.  The mounting was very smooth.

I don't know about the 6.5 being light for hogs. We have killed a lot of them with 257 Roberts rifles. Shoot when I lived here before I killed truckloads with a 22lr. But I had to pick my shots. With the Roberts you can pretty much take any shot if your not worried about saving the meat.

The 6.5 is the minimum caliber in Germany to take hogs.  I am shooting S&B 130 gr softpoint.  For smaller hogs this will work for me,  but I dont know about larger hogs.

You do know of course that the 6.5 swede has been used to take all their big game including moose...

I though you was in Texas not Germany. 

The thinking that we need 500 hp cars and magnum rifles for everything is and American thing not shared by the whole world.  strange I know. But I believe your 6.5 will do just fine on hogs. Hay, I've got a modern day swede. Remington calls it the 260. I haven't even shot anything with it been having too much fun with my Roberts.

I am in Texas, where bigger is better.  I am one of those guys that would rather take a hog with a slug and drop it in its tracks than try for an ear shot with a .22   




With the 16 ga barrels I could use slugs in the 16 ga barrels for the big hog.


I am still thinking the 16x16/6.5x57R might be the perfect Texas Farm/Ranch gun.  The MPBR for the 6.5x57R is 270 yards.
