Sako Black Bear vs. Ruger Gunsite
« on: May 02, 2013, 04:39:04 AM »

Has anybody handled or shot one of the Sako Black Bear rifles in .308?    Though very expensive ($1,700), they would seem to me to be highly preferable to the Ruger Gunsite rifle.   Total capacity is 6 rounds (5 in mag, one in spout).  The detachable mag fits flush, and has staggered feeding. Double latch system on the magazine to prevent accidentally losing it.   The rifle can be loaded from the top without dropping the magazine.  Handy 21 inch barrel, semi fluted.  Synthetic stock.   Only weighs about 6.5 pounds.  I think its all stainless steel.    If I could only own one rifle, this may be the one.

  All comments welcome.

I don't have a Sako Black Bear but i do have two 85's.  My "black bear" rifle is a stainless 338 Fed with jaw dropping walnut with knots and swirls in the grain. I have looked at the Ruger Gunsite.
If money were an issue, i would get a Savage Axis .308, put a Timney trigger on it, and install a Nikon Monarch 1-4x20 with the German no 4 reticule.. Or, a similar  1-4x20 scope of good quality and illumination.
If money were no object, i would get the Sako and  a good Zeiss scope with a bold reticule.   You cannot possibly go wrong with a Sako. They are head and shoulders above other factory rifles.

Triggers, bolts, magazine, everything is perfect. If i would get any other rifle i would be left thinking: "i wish this was that way, and that was this way". With Sako, i just adjust the triggers to my liking and i am happy.  By the way: you can remove the magazine and insert an Allen wrench though a hole to adjust the triggers. They are better than any out there.

Ultimately it's your choice. Money is an issue for me, so....   i will wait a year or two and save and get another Sako.

Also, consider were and how you will hunt black bears. On a driven hunt in brush i would use a pump rifle.
