DWM built Argentine 1909 info please
« on: April 24, 2013, 12:25:10 AM »
I read somewhere that four digit serial numbers preceede by a letter, if the bolt handle was turned down, were only serialized with an A, B, or C.  My DWM 1909 has a clearly marked "F" preceeding the clearly marked four numbers and a turned down bolt.  The turned down bolt is clearly not a post-manufacture job.  The original rifle was of the carbine length (and not cut down).
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Ed

Sounds like a beauty.  7mm I presume?  Still have the crest?  7.63 caliber?  If you don't want to keep it as a collecter, scope it and hunt with it.

My 1909 Argentine is the carbine version, with the serial number beginning with "D".  It had a turned down bolt handle when original.  In the picture, the handle has been further modified after I bought it for scope use, as even the factory turned bolt handle is still not low enough for scope use.  Mine is re-chambered / re-bored for 35 Whelen, and has stood up to quite a few rounds without issue.  Sometimes hear about "soft" ones, but most regard them as strong as any 98 based Mauser.  Very nice pre-war quality, and the hinged floor plate is a rare item on Mausers.

Weren' t these in 7,65x53 argentine??  With the 1891 carbines these were cut down by ye old gun shop in La. in the 60's. The dead give away was the swept back bolt. i'm not sure about the 1909 being cut down 29" barrels to make carbines so they would sell. I believe these are talked about at the;
www.carbinesforcollectors.com   sight.
No flame intended yours is probably an orginal carbine. For some reason the german manufactured  south american mausers seem to be the really purdy mausers.
