how to remove pork discoloration from carbon steel
« on: April 23, 2013, 08:30:14 AM »
well a few months ago  when i was 1st getting into Tameshigiri/back yard cutting i used to cut  packs of pork trimmings(1-2 inchs thinkness) with my 1045 carbon steel katana and well it was a mess all around(it took days to get the pork smell off of me). Anyways , those trimming left a pork acid etched or  something like that on  the balde beacuse now there is a light metal discoloration on the blade( like damascus steel patterns ). someone  told me that with  car wax you can easily remove the discoloration, grease, fat, whatever, with soft wax used for car decoration.  Is this true and will it harm the steel?

any carbon steel blade will tarnish
when used for kitchen duties or
butchering. i kind of ignore it and
move on. if you wish to keep a shiney
polished finish you can use a commercial
metal polish like semichrome or flitz, or
use what i do, the eagle one never-dull.
it looks like a big can full of cotton,
which it is. it's been made for years,
way before i was born, although it wasn't
eagle one then.
lots of choices.
good luck

Yeah, i shot that when i 1st got my sword and since that time i have got way better. So, tooth paste with baking soda  mix will work and not harm the steel  and get the finish back to being shiney ?
