I took the op to mean we had to pick one for grab and go . In a time with out HVAC. If you got the tools for HVAC you should be set . But if survival is the goal Ill take the machete as just living will be a chore. And there should be plenty of empty houses around some may very well be ventilated to boot.

Tackelberry, sure would like to see a picture of that groove.  "I also use the dremel and carved a groove along the top of the hammer head that fits a decent size nail nicely and lets you start it without holding a nail.  Should have taken a pic of the top."

Here you go.  It's basically a shallow wide trough deep enough for a D-sinker to just nestle into it and the cross slot is deeper to allow for the head to go into and will work with penny nail heads also.  Requires a minimum 1" long nail to sit in there and stick out enough to hit against something.  By doing this, it's easier to nail with mittens or thick gloves on.  I also store this with a magnet against the head, so it's slightly magnetic.  Helps hold the nails tight for starting.  ;)

Do you think it would work to drill it and recess in a small magnet?  Like one one off the end of one of those pocket screwdrivers...

The discussion drifted because neither a knife, nor an axe, is by itself a sufficient all around tool if you can only carry one thing.   The responders voted "no" to being forced to choose either one, and went with something totally different that can do the job of both.

One thing is for sure, if there's some big "event", there ain't gonna be a shortage of knives, axes or empty dwellings.

They may feel that way now but like those settlers who headed west their trail will be littered with dropped equipment as they realize the weight is too much. Like animals who hunt for their food we will not wish to use energy we can't replace easy.

When reduced to it, I've made a boar spear before during survival training.  It's a lot better for stopping a charging animal and keeps them more than an arms length out.  A cross piece about 6" wide from a heavy stick 20" back from the point gives something to help stop and control that distance.  Failing to put a cross piece on will net you a pissed off bear in your face.  I still would prefer a gun for bear.  lol

I played the game.
But I find it hard to really think of only one.
When I go hunting I often have a small hatchet in my day pak, With a Cabelas tamahawk on order with a carrying case ot cut down on weight and make it easier to carry.  The little pack hatchet I have does not have the leverage that the longer handle of the hatchet does and I can trim the wood handle to fit in my day pack.   That usually carries a spare folder or a light weight fixed blade like the Cold steel Lite pendelton hunter.
I carry my $ in my front pocket with a Gerber Air Ranger being used as a money clip.  I use it as a tool almost everyday to cut and strip wire, use the scales as a file, and have used it to jimmy locks and have stuck it in door jams to make sure I do not get locked on a roof again.  (I am a boiler salesman and often have to getinto boiler roooms, and connect controllers or add jumpers when needed)  I was once on the roof of a bank and was not allowed ot have my cell phone in the bank,  The keys they handed me were to get out but the lock the other way to get in was a different key.  I was on the roof for three hours before I could climb down to a level where i could get the attention of someone walking in and asked if they would get the manager to get me off the roof and then had ot climb back up 2 stories to the roof,  -Yes I stick the knife in the door jams so the can not close.
I have a thick bladed fixed blade I use as a hunting knife that does alot.  and on my Game bags and shooting vests I have a Dozier design Ka Bar folder that are sharp, strong, and easy to resharpen and they are always there when I go shoot sporting clays or wing hunting.  I find it hard to think I only have one to choose from but it was a good game.
I have a buddy that carries a Gurka Kukri that acts as hatchet, machette, and knife.  I think it too big, but have used it to make firewood and clear shooting lanes when setting up a blind.  It worked but I think a good keen hatchet works better.  I also have one of those bush blades that has the brush hook on the back that was issued in WWII.  Mine does not have the hand guard.  I used it once when duck hunting to add some cover and again find my Fiscars hatchet to be more effecient.
I think a better question would be "what bladed implaments do you carry in the field and why?".

Here are some of mine that I made...

:o :o :o  BEN!!!  A "Spike" 'hawk!  That's what I want to make!  A little broader blade, a little shorter and curved spike...  ;D  I have got to get over to your place!!!   :D

I would probably vote for a 'hawk since my mind runs more to the weaponry then the utilitarian viewpoint.  But I just can't imagine being without a knife...  :-\

...... Survival situation of any kind and you can only take one cutting tool and the knife in your pocket doesn't count unless that is all you are taking,.....................what and why are you taking it?

One item?  Never happen that way, unless ALL I was allowed (like at Church or in a courtroom) and had was a nail clipper!

I remember 'Tiger Cole' from "Flight of the Intruder" (about the Navy's A-6 bombers in Vietnam) had a huge honkin' Cold Steel knike with about a 14" blade!  as part of his flight gear (he'd been previously shotdown in enemy territory).

I haven't settled on a chopping-type weapon or 'survival-edge,' but kurkhri type knife or similar Cold Steel to that one in the movie might be alternatives to a solidly-made copy of a U.S.G.I. WWII machete.  My dad had two machetes we used for bush clearing when I was clearing acreage in Florida.  Good tool!

I once saw a ghurka knife with a nice leather sheath, and mounted on the front of the sheath was a much smaller sheath with a "mini-ghurka" knife it it.  Much thinner blade and razor sharp.  I think this set up was the real deal and fairly popular in the Nepal area.

whats the background / history of your hawk-pick?

whats the handle made of?  its gorgeous!

this thread got me to thinking (need to do more of that!) about what implements would make good weapons?  As well as suvival tools?  and tools to  help get a stuck rig out?

a shovel (whatever its appropriate shape size configuration)
an ax / hatchet
machete
bow saw
cum-along
heavy duty jack
wedge
baseball bat?  ;D

Not looking to cook meat on/in anything but a grill or skillet, but Eastwing along with Cold Steel might be a first choice for brand name to find these weapons/tools!

Couger, that particular hawk is from a rail road spike.  The hafts I buy in bulk pre made, (roughed).  It is a hickory haft.  There are several methods of decoration, this one is stained, and a string dipped in mineral spirits is wound around to create the pattern, then set on fire to burn off.

If you fellas decide to make hawks from rail road spikes, be sure to buy them legally at a scrap yard, etc. and save your receipt.  It's illegal to have them otherwise.

Couger,

I've got to tell ya that one of the most useful tools I've ever owned is the Gerber folding camping saw.  It has an incredibly good blade that saws right through wood.  It is only about 12 inches long, and folds up, like a folding knife, into its plastic handle.   I've sawn down six inch diameter trees in short order with no problems and little effort.  It weighs next to nothing.   I keep one in my tool box, one in my backpack, and one with my garden tools.  As a cutting tool, it is 100% more effective than a hatchet.   (Never chop when you can saw!)You would carry this with you instead of a bow saw.
