How to carry a long barrel revolver with a scope?
« on: February 20, 2004, 11:06:05 AM »
I just traded for a Smith Model 48, 8 3/8" barrel, with a 2X Leupold mounted. I found a nice looking chest "holster" for it in Cabella's catalog, but unfortunately, they have sold out of the holster and it is no longer available. I believe it was listed as Mil-TEch, and the price was very reasonable.

Does anyone know of a source for a similar holster that will allow me to comfortably carry this revolver in the field? Please list contact info and pricing if you have it.

Does anyone have a suggestion for any other way to comfortably carry this revolver in the field that will also allow it to be used fairly quickly?

Thanks very much for your help.

Put a stock on it?

(I know, our socialist masters would disapprove since the barrel is now too short).

I'd try to find a sling set up for it.I've used an Uncle Mike's holster for a Ruger SBH and several contenders, scoped and not. They are a little noisy and NOT designed for fast draw situations. I believe you should have the gun in your hand as much as possible and holster it only when neccesary.
like when climbing into your stand or crossing a fence.    jh

I made a cross draw holster for my Ruger 45 BH. When I mounted a scope on it I just cut a slot the with of the base in the top of the holster. Works for me.

All my scope handguns have slings on them.Revolvers I'll send to magna-port,and have them install studs. While its there,I'll also have a trigger job. I believe any top end gunsmith could do it.

If all you want to do is to sucure your handgun while removing a deer from the woods, just use a single sling and sucure the sling via the handgun's trigger guard. Its worked for me for the last ten deer. Rod

Thanks for all the replys. I have given serious thought  to a sling. You can buy the butt swivels and pins that were used on the old Model 1917 and Victory model Smiths. All they would require for installation would be a hole drilled in the grip strap. They would limit the selection of grips that could be used though. I wasn't aware Mag-N-Port did this kind of work. I will check it out. I don't mind carrying the piece, but sometimes you need both hands to tend to business!! I hate to lay it down in the dirt.....

I appreciate all the suggestions and info.

A revolver on a sling sounds like an accident waiting to happen.

Questor,

I got to agree with you on this.  Sounds like an accident waiting to happen to me too.  I made a cross draw holster for my scoped Super Blackhawk and I am making one very similar for my scoped 8 inch Security Six.  Lawdog

I carry my Dan Wesson in my hand while hunting. I put the sling on to climb the tree stand ,I found it works better than a holster.

I am trying to figure out the "accident waiting to happen" thing. I would NOT walk around with my revolver cocked and a round under the hammer. I do NOT walk around with a round in the chamber in my rifle either.Only scenario I see is catching the trigger on a twig or dipping the barrel in the mud? This is just as easily done with a 24 inch rifle barrel.
 please explain.  jh

I wasn’t talking about in particular.  I am NOT talking about walking around with a cocked handgun either.  What I am talking about is a handgun hanging from a sling that is NOT under the direct control of the shooter at all times.  A rifle on a sling over a person's shoulder is under more control then a handgun.  I use a sling on all of my rifles and when I bend or stoop down I remove the rifle from my shoulder thus keeping the rifle under my control.  I have seen handgun hunters using a sling that didn't watch the handgun as they bent or stooped down to examine a track or whatever.  The handgun actually was allowed to come in contact with brush.  They never checked the handgun after doing such and even you have to admit the possibility of something getting stuck in the barrel excised.  This is what I mean about an accident waiting to happen.  Lawdog

I used to teach hunter safety(YEARS AGO) and we had a young gentleman come to class with a set of barrels for a cheap shotgun. The muzzle end of one barrel was burst. He said he was hunting birds and scooped up some new fallen snow when swinging on a rising bird. A friend said his rifle barrel burst when he tried to fire it after being knocked in the mud from a mortar blast in Viet Nam. I saw a hand gun blow up while a guy at our range was practicing for a shoot. My car was hit by another driver picking up his cigarette.Yes, accidents happen! We can only strive to limit them by educating people about their causes. NO FLAMES INTENDED!
the poster asked about a way to carry a long barreled handgun and I responded with 1 of  MY ways. I have  holsters and prefer not to wear them while crawling thru grass and dirt.A hip holster gets in the way when you sit.The sling is easy to use as a brace, keeps the pistol handy and is generally quiter than any holster.  jh

designed for revolvers with scopes Looks good to me and I intend to have one for my next scoped revolver if I ever scope another one. On revolvers lately I prefer Iron sights. If I feel the need for a scope I dig out a contender and use the revolver as back-up. I get better accuracy at long range with contenders and the more powerful cartridge makes for a flatter shot. the 30-30 is a dandy for those 100 yard shots especually with nice spitzer bullets and a decent load designed for the 14" barrel. The revolver is saved for those close 25 yard shots when I jump one while stalking or walking throughthe woods then its an easy shot.

scoped handguns with slings?
« Reply #21 on: May 02, 2004, 01:49:48 PM »
I tell you what a handgun on a sling is fine so long as it is watched as you bend aobe and also are in a hunting condition that is free from Laurel alder and the like but when you gey into brush or alder or laurel you really should go with a mil-tech or a bianchi accumold it not only protects the gun it keeps the thing close to you allowing you to crawl on the ground stoop over etc.. zAlso the trigger is allways covered and no chance of a fired shoot ringing out is going to happen. I suggest holstering dont sling the thing!
