50 cal huntsman and .501 sw bullet
« on: April 01, 2013, 05:38:02 PM »
Is any one shooting a resized  .501 sw 400 gr  cast bullet in a huntsman 50 cal muzzleloader
I have a friend that is shooting the .501 cast   Paper patch  resized to .501  in a TC 50 cal Renegade   and is getting  great  groups @ 100 yds.   I am thinking i could  Prolly  do this in my nef 50 cal.   I havent sluged my barrel  but  think the  Nef 50 may be smaller  bore by a .001 or 2  than the  TC renegade,      has anyone  PP a nef 50  ?    thanks.

All 3 of my .50 cal H&R/NEF muzzleloaders have slugged out to .502". They shoot .503" lead conicals from 430 gr to 460 gr very well, with 440 grain being optimum, IMO.

Haven't tried PP, but lubed conicals do very well.

I have coverted 6 of the newer 50 cal. huntsman barrels to 50-70 cartridge guns and they all had .510 groove dia. They all shoot fine with bullets of .510 - .512 dia  but thats being breech loaded  and with smokeless powder.  You couldnt push one in the muzzle end.   ???

Jedman,

The bore diameter (nominal) for the NEF Huntsman .50 caliber is .501" according to the manual, the groove diameter (nominal) is listed as .510". Muzzleloaders are measured from the land to land, and breech loaders from the groove to groove. All of mine are .502" land to land.

Can you post up some pics of your 50-70 conversions from the breech? Did you bore out the breech plug and chamber the whole works, or build a custom breech? I take it you have to extract/eject your cartridges by hand with a tool? Would like to see one.

This reply is late by over 8 years.  :o  For some reason I can’t get pics to post from my iPad and that’s what I have to use.
The under lug on the Huntsman barrels have the recess for a extractor you just need a small file to reach in there and clean it up and I use a spring powered extractor. The only barrels I use for the 50-70 conversion are the ones threaded for the 7/8-20 thread breech plug. I remove the breech plug and use a piece of a rifle barrel ( 4140 ) and turn and thread it 7/8- 20 on the OD.
The front mating surface is just faced off flat and I pre bore the center of the new breech plug so the 50-70 reamer has little to cut and the pilot on the reamer will reach into the bore. Once it is dry fit and everything is good I degrease everything good and epoxy the breech plug into the barrel. Once the breech face is cut flush I ream the new chamber , the 50-70 case is 1 3/4” long and the joint where the breech plug butts up to the barrel is approximately 1 1/4” in so there is never any gas pressure against the joint since the brass is a 1/2” longer . When you look at the fired brass there is absolutely no line or any indication there is a joint in the chamber so it works perfectly. I also did several CVA Apex stainless steel 50 cal. Muzzleloader barrels into 50-70’s.
