riflescope on a contender?

i'm thinkin on it. my .223 barrel needs a scope. can't afford another good burris 3x12 handgun scope right now. i want it on my 6tcu barrel now anyway. may be a cheap option and a different way to shoot this barrel. what are the plus and minus's of this method? how hard you reckon it would be to shoot in the field or off the bench?

Sounds pretty risky to me, but if you have a rifle scope that has sufficient eye releif, I am sure it would work.  Myself...I am thinking of trading my super 14 or selling it to get a 16" barrel that I can send to get re-chambered to Ackley improved and make a varmint carbine.  That is ONE way of getting into cheaper scopes.

I have a Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24 mounted now on the VVCG Product Test barrel. With the 50s and heavier the way I shoot from a bench it barely touches me at the shot but not enough to be a concern. With 40s it doesn't touch me at all. This isn't a real long eye relief scope. One with longer eye relief would be easier but yes this idea is indeed very feasible with the .223 Rem. That's as much recoil however as I'd personally try it on due to the light hold technique I use.

:wink: A few years back, there was a lengthy article in the HHI Sixgunner newsletter about the subject. A couple guys were using scopes to 24 power with centerfire .22s and other small wildcats with phenomenol results. They also made their own large, flat forends for varmint shooting. They were cutting out the ace of clubs at loooong range with them. I believe they applied just enough pressure to the top of the scope with their off hand to control recoil. RKBA!

I've used a 4-16 Tasco rifle scope on my 6tcu for over 20 years. I use the barrel for ground hogs. I made a cradle out of plywood that mounts on a camera tripod, for a rest. I find the target in the scope, then I move my head back far enough so that the scope doesn't hit my nose. I have only about 1/3 of the field of view through the scope, but it's enough. I bought a soft rubber ring that mounts on the scope's eyepiece just in case I get to close. It will still hit fairly hard, but the scope will not cut your nose. it's available ftom Brownells or Graph + Son. It takes a little pratice but once you get the hang of using the rifle scope, you will be amazed how far the 6tcu will reach out.  8)

Go for it. I have a Bushnell 4x12 on my 14" Encore in .223. I take my off hand and place it on top of the scope with a little forward pressure and had no problems thus far. I really like the increased field of view and quicker target aquisition.  :-)

8)  got my 4x12 simmons mounted on the .223 barrel. this just may work. not as bad as i thought it would be. still need to shoot it yet to see, but i can hold it pretty good and get a sight picture. definately worth a try if you got one layin around. i think i'll get some 40gr blitzkings or balistic tips and give it a whirl. whats your best .223 pistol powder.  IMR4198 maybe?

I prefer H335 in my 223s, also used W748 with good results.KN
