Goin' Hog Hunting!
« on: March 09, 2013, 01:47:57 AM »
Well, it's not perfect, but it's good!  :)  We are wintering in Texas from Michigan, and I have made many friends here in Medina in the 'Hill Country'.  Of course my friends know that I am a hunter and pistol shooter and one of them told me last night he has a hog problem and invited me over next Tuesday to hunt them!  The 'not perfect' part is that my FA Mag-na-port Stalker is still home in Michigan!  So I'm taking the Hi Hunter 44 Mag or maybe my Colt SAA .45 if I get a shot 50 yds or less.  If it's much farther than that, I'm going to have my scoped Handi rifle 7-08 with me as these 'old eyes' need some help.  It may be a good day or a bust, but wish me luck and hopefully I'll have a story to tell!  44 Man

You get the 'Lucky Dog' award ! I figured you'd make friends there purty quick  ;D . Its good looking country, Ive visited and camped down there several times since the late '70's and a motorcycle rally. I could live there, for sure. Other than the trees are shorter it looks a lot like Wisconsin (may Michigan too?).

Lloyd, I was thinking of using the 44 mag Hi Hunter just because it's the newest gun.  You know how that is.  But I'm going to take my Colt SAA just because I want to take something with that.  My 255 gr SWC (that I got from you years ago) do 925 fps from the 5 1/2" barrel.  She'll do just fine!  44 Man

Well, I didn't see anything this afternoon.  The rancher told me they often come out later in the evening so I'm going back on Thursday and staying until dark.  Putting the Colt away and taking the Hy Hunter .44 on Thursday.  The 5 1/2" barrel on the Colt doesn't work well in the chairs at the blind.  The 4" barrel on the 44 Mag will work much better.  44 Man

Thanks for sharing .44 Man.  Glad you are getting to see some hogs, they seem to be pretty sparse here in MI.  Good to hear the reports as I may be doing some visiting down there later this year.

Keep us posted.

Oh, and when I do, it'll be with the 4 5/8" Lipsey's Flattop .44 Special with 240 gr LSWC at 1000 FPS (+/-).

Well I spent a lovely evening in the blind.  There were Peacocks just leaving when I arrived and most of the corn was gone, so I replenished it.  As I sat in the blind, a herd of cattle grazed through, sniffed the corn but was more interested in the fresh grass.  Then came the two burros!  They were determined that they were going to eat all of the corn!  Finally I had to leave the blind and chuck some rocks at them to chase them away. (four times!  Yes!  They are bullheaded!) Then I got to watch the best show of the night when to bulls decided to chose right in front of my blind to try and decide who was dominate.  They gave me a mighty pushing and shoving show!  I didn't see any hogs, too much going on I guess, but I had a great evening and I look forward to doing it again sometime.  44 Man

Being out there in the blind is what counts.  You may have to stay out a little later in this warm weather.  There are only four venemous snakes around Medina, but not a major worry, just pick up your feet and don't kick the brush.

It's such a shame you've been stranded out there with few stops in town other than Love Creek.  You'll just have to try and get by on their apple pie, apple turnovers and APPLE ICE CREAM.  Absolutely the best in the U.S.  What a hard way to go...

Sorry Lloyd, I was not able to get back again.  We are selling the fifth wheel (renting a place down here) and I have been packing up all week.  You wouldn't believe how much stuff you can accumulate in such a small place!  The rancher told me that his son went back two days after I did and saw around 30 but wasn't hunting.  (I always see game when I am not hunting too!)  I have an open invitation for when we get back from Mich next fall.  And I will have more time to hunt, plus I'll bring a few more toys with me.  Yes, I will have a sling shot next time I go over there.  And I still had a great time; huntin' is huntin' reguardless of whether you harvest game or not!  And yes, Apple Creek has the best apple ice cream ever!  I had some last week!  44 Man
