Ammo? Reloading? Guns? What is available?
« on: March 06, 2013, 10:20:08 AM »
I read of shortages and a run on everything gun related. What is the situation firsthand?  What do YOU see?

1. Are guns available? Pistols? Black guns? Sporting arms?

2. Can you get ammo? Are any calibers hard to get? What about 22s?

3. Reloading supplies?  Powder? Primers? Equipment?

4.  Regional differences? Is the market the same in FL as in MO?

The questions dont involve law, just shortages. If by law you cant have a semi-auto in NJ, that is not a shortage.

5. Last question. Is this another panic? If availability has thinned, will it come back?  Soon?

Your answers will help guide your GBO brothers thru this crisis[?].                      P.A.

no .22 lr here in quite a while.
sure puts a crimp in plinking and practice.
most all common and "tactical" caliber
items are scarce.

most anything of the items in question
can be had for drop 'em and bend over pricing.

i'm not hurting, but like others have posted before,
i am loathe to expend ammo and components that
i'm unsure when or if i'll be able to replace.

have an extra dozen new unused arrows though. . . . .

Only rarely used ammo available here, and not much of that.  Lots of low brass cheapo shotshells, no 22, .223, .308 or the like.

The only 22 rimfire I've seen for sale in a long time are cb shorts and shot.

No primers, except a small amt. of 209, usually in the muzzie dept.
Little powder, and most of it is odd stuff.

Going on 4 mos. now I've found no rimfire.

Around here, black rifles are non existent. Bolt action rifles and shotguns are generally Available, but selection is kinda thin. I've seen a few pistols in stock locally, but popular models are pretty well sold out. FYI - black rifles are sporting arms, as well.

Reloading supplies are mostly out of stock, except for a few specialty powders and rare calibers. Ammo is also out of stock, including .22's and other rimfires. All I've seen on shelves is the more expensive shotgun shells like turkey and waterfowl loads.

This is, without a doubt, panic buying. I live in the people's republic of Illinois, so that panic may be more severe than elsewhere. However, I think the bubble will burst and things will return to shelves - provided new policy does not prohibit them.

im sitting this one out basically.yu can get 22 if yu need them by cheking local stores a lot.i got a bunch last time after things died down so i dont need any.since my son has decided to concentrate on his academics and girls,my 22 ammo lasts a lot longer.

i was lucky, i had a gpa who lived thru the depression.he imparted a lot of knowledge to me.the scariest thing he ever told me was "we had plenty of money, but there was nuttin to buy"!he also said we didnt have much but since we farmed "we always ate good". he explained while town folk were in soup lines he was eatin pork chops and ham.or beefsteak and taters.

he also said he had plenty of black powder and primers and stuf for his win hi wall 32-40. of course plenty to him was maybe 100 rounds werth.

Big city North Carolina and you can find what you want, if you have the money and move quick. There are black rifles in local gunshops as well as other suddenly high end autoloaders. There are all calibers depending on whick gunshop you go to, over half your choices will be foreign ammo. Stock IS dwindling but I count all calibers. Expect to pay 1.00 a shot for .308 AND .223. Fiocci or sellers and bellot. Little American made ammo to be found. All standard .22lr available is foreign. Powder is reduced to oddball selections and primers are scarcer but can still be found in all formats..100 large rifle CCI'S are 8.99.  Yup $8.99. Guess what...we pay it..

Several shop owners spoke of incoming shipments pretty soon... another said that to me but said to an employee, " after we sell all the bullets we could sell em PICTURES of bullets". Not exactly sure what he meant by that but it didn't sound promising...   j

Here in central PA-

"Black" rifles are around, but not in the numbers or prices of before.  Common hunting rifles are widely available, as are most common handguns.

.22's are available at fairly normal prices in the small, local gunshops.  Same with most handgun and rifle calibers, though .223 and to a lesser extent, 9mm and 308 are harder to find in the economical FMJ loadings.

Reloading components are widely available at the small shops.  In the past few weeks I picked up large rifle and pistol, as well as small rifle primers at $31.00 per thousand.  Powder at about $20.00 per lbs.  Bullets are available for all calibers, both locally, and at the larger on line retailers, but in high demand calibers like .224 and .308, bulk practice bullets are hard to find, so you might have to purchase something different and possibly more expensive to re-load with, say a box of .308 150 grain soft points at $26.00 as apposed to a box of 150 grain FMJ bullets at $20.00.

Seems the worst places to find stuff are the gun shows, where the prices are ridiculous, and the big shops like Walmart, Gander or Dicks, where stock is sold out as fast as it comes in.  I would spend a lot more time checking out the small mom and pop gunshops, or browsing the on-line retailers looking for components, and be willing to try a different powder or bullet if need be.  Sites like Gunbroker offer availability of almost any gun you might be interested in, though expect to pay more then in the past for high demand items like AR's.  The key is to be willing to search, both locally, and on the net for what you want, and be willing to compromise to an extent at times.  The old days of just walking into your local shop and being able to find anything you want are over.  I think some of the shortages are regionally based as well.

If you have to ask you must not be going to the gun stores or looking on line often. I have been doing so partly cuz I wondered myself and partly to inform GBO members.

The ammo and reloading supplies both locally and online is dismal. No one has 22 rimfire ammo other than extremely expensive match ammo, blanks and an occasional few boxes of shorts or longs both costing nearly what the match ammo does.

Ammo for .32acp, .380acp, 9mm, .40 S&W and .45acp just isn't to be had online and darn little at local stores. Bullets for them just isn't out there and primers seem to be about as difficult to buy. If you find them the price is usually jacked up beyond reason.

Magazines are also either not available or going for up to 10 to 20 times what they were selling for last year. I saw AR 30 round mags at $50 each, buy three get one free. They could be had for $5 to $6 last year and some places had them in quantity for even less.

Guns for the most part at least locally seem to be in fair supply 1911s are everywhere, there is a glut on them locally but prices are outrageous which maybe why there are so many on the shelves. Most have plenty of Glocks as well and lots of other handguns. Ruger guns are in short supply but S&W is plentiful. Black rifles are in pretty good stock but prices have doubled or tripled on them since last year.

Shotgun ammo seems plentiful. The one store locally that sells most of the loading supplies locally had a fair stock of powder last time I was there but hardly any primers at all and I don't recall seeing any bullets on the shelves other than cast bullets from a local commercial caster.

From what I've seen both locally and online retailers if ya buy a new gun ya best already have ammo on hand cuz ya sure ain't gonna find much to shoot in it yet guns are being sold like there is no tomorrow.

Bud's is one place I have bought from online and use as a barometer of what's out there for non dealers to buy. They had from 5 to 7 pages worth of Glocks and Sigs both last year. Now they have or had last time I looked a total of three models of Glocks and fewer Sigs. They had no Ruger revolvers at all and almost no semiautos either from Ruger. S&W is out there as well.

Everywhere I look locally or online it's doom and gloom with expectations that it ain't gonna get better this year and no one seems too hopeful it will next year.

At what online retailers Larry? I've gone thru all of the links in my book marks likely 50 to 75 of them and no one has them in stock at least not for the common calibers like .32, .380, 9mm, 40 or 45. I've noticed lately some do not tell you if they are or aren't in stock until you order and they are then out of stock and on backorder. Those that do tell you seem to all same Out of Stock!

I'm not really in need of anything but have been trying to keep up with the status so I can report to folks when they ask like in this thread.

GB

I just now got off line from ordering some reloading components-

Hornady 150 grain boat tail .308 interlocks at $23.00 per box of 100 at Midway.  5 box per day limit.  Bought 5 boxes

Nosler .224 55 grain bullets at $35.99 per box of 250, also at Midway.  Bought 3 boxes

Nosler 240 grain .429 bullets, 250 pack for $51.49, at Natchez.  Bought 2 boxes.

All in stock, order confirmed via e-mail.

Also noticed standard RCBS .223 and .308 Win. dies were available at Midway.  The bullets were all I really looked for today, as that was all I needed for now, but as I said, powder and primer availability is very good in my local shops.  Just called my local shop looking for H-4895 and BLC2.  He has both in stock,  $21.00 lbs.  Heading there now as a matter of fact.

Natchez is off limits to folks here in Bama and a couple other states so I never bother looking at them. They won't sell to me anyway.

I've been checking Midway regularly but the items you ordered aren't really on my list of needs tho that's a good price on the Nolser 224 bullets. I'm quite well stocked for all the rifles I shoot and really in good shape on the handgun stuff as well.

I'd buy SP and LP primers if I found them at a decent price. I think I'm over looking a stash of 5000-6000 of the two of them but since I haven't located them in the normal hiding places I'm beginning to wonder about my memory of ordering them last time I ordered from Powder Valley.

I'd grap up more 9mm 115 JHPs or 124 JHPs if found at normal pries and same for .40 S&W on 155-180 JHPs. I'd likely jump on 185, 200 or 230 JHPs for the .45acp also if the price was right but I'm sitting OK on all of them as well as factory ammo for now so I'd sure not pay any premiums.

Now 22LR ammo I'd sure like to find in stock. Come warm weather the boys are gonna wanna shoot their 22 rifles and my stocks are getting lower than I like. I have 15,000+ on backorder at very reasonable prices but who knows when they will show up. I'm not really expecting to see all of them even by the end of this year. Some tho will hopefully trickle in to me for the boys back yard range fun. I split my orders up with three places I think and multiple brands to improve odds some will arrive.

Larry we're at 29.00+\- per lb here and stock is sparse between 4 different shops I've visited locally. Soon we'll be opening up shotgun shells for our pistol powder..next is grinding blue diamond match heads down... ???

Went to a local pawn shop gun store today and saw 10+ semi auto rifles that weren't there a week ago. People credit card statements might be coming in and their dumping their recent purchase, not sure but the prices sure hadn't changed, $600 for an SKS and 1200 for a saiga .223. Others looked similar in pricing. Ask the salesman if he'd gotten any ammo in and he just looked at me :o. Guess not.

Have an Academy Sports opening near us soon, look forward to seeing how their ammo shelves look.. wished i'd taken a picture of the Bass Pro reloading section recently..there was not one single item on the powder racks..not one.  J

Academy around here, the shelves are empty as well, when they have any pistol ammo it's behind the service desk. Some shotshells, some rifle ammo but nothing like 223 308 etc etc

Son in law goes to gander mountain early am and gets ticket shows up at 9:00 and picks up some bulk ammo sometimes. Usually first 7 tickets get what's there.

Still able to get most of the stuff you need around here if you know where to look.
May only be able to buy it in smaller quantity's but it's all still here except 22s.
They are really hard to find.
Prices range from just a tad above what they were before all this started to pure crazy so you have to shop around but most just pay the price when they find what they want.
Myself, I am good on about everything I shoot or reload for and can weather this storm for years if need be and still be good.
A little here and a little there over the last 40 some years and you end up with a pretty good supply at some really good prices.
Maybe now, those that didn't listen the last time this craze happened will take heed and when things die down (if they ever do) you will start to get yourself in a position of self reliance as far as ammo and supplies are concerned.
You can never have to much and if you do, you can always sell it.

The great thing is this stuff keeps pretty good. Not too hot or too cold and it is good for decades.

I did see a story about Some American companies that produce rim fire ammo. It is common to make over a million rounds a month. So my point is, eventually supply and demand will meet.

Local WM gets one brick of .22 whenever, according to the clerk.  They limit it to 3 boxes.  The prices on the tags have held steady so far.  This guy thinks the government is buying up all the capacity to create a shortage, then will dump the stuff on the open market, sinking the manufacturers.  I think they will just sink it in the sea if they can't find a use ::) for it.

Brothr found .22 at Dicks, $10.00 per 50.  He didn't buy any.

.22 is the loose change of the ammo world.  I still can go for life, and still leave stuff for the grandkids, but I cannot take them out the make several hundred holes in a piece of paper and replace what is gone.
just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they are not watching you

Just bought a 45 ACP as a gift for son in law.  Dealer had one bulk can of ammo, (hard ball), and let me have 20.  I went back the next day, it was all gone.  I've been unable to find any local or on line.  So....I guess sil will have to sit it up and look at it until I can come up with ammo.

I've got dies, primers, and powder...no bullets...same story.

I was going thru my stuff the other day and found 3 1/2 boxes of 7.62 x 39. I haven't owned a SKS in a while so I took them to my favorite gunshop to do some trading. He was out of large pistol primers and most of the powders I use but I had done some research on other powders to reload 38's and 45 Colts so I had a backup list in my head. He said he couldn't keep Unique and Bullseye on the shelf. Came home with a can of Red Dot. Not my #1 choice but it will go bang in my calibers if I need it. A friend called and next weekend we'll be having a casting and sizing session. We've both got enough primers to last a while, maybe until this run on shooting stuff calms down a bit.
