Best way to clean a LA and solvents you like
« on: February 27, 2013, 04:00:31 PM »
Folks, I started a thread on ".45 Colt vs. .30-30" that seems to have taken a life of its own.  It was in prep of me buying a new lever gun to supplement my Win. 94 .30-30.  I would also like to ask how you all clean your rifles.  Do you clean from the breach or muzzle?  (Not a question for my bolts and single-shots.)  What solvents do you prefer for getting the crud out the best?  I've been told if I shoot cast to make sure all the copper is removed first.  How best to do this?  I'm still using my old batch of solvents and wondered if any new "miracle" stuff out there actually works.  Thanks.

WipeOut  foam works great for powder crud, etc. Lead usually requires more mechanical means, i.e. solvents/paste/brush, in which case you have to work from the muzzle. You can find muzzle protectors at good black powder supplies ( muzzle loaders) just go slow. I use BoreSnakes a lot and EezOx, but sometimes some JBs paste on a rod/brush. Good luck to you.

I've always cleaned my leverguns from the muzzle. The Tipton carbon fiber wads are really good for this, and add a muzzle protector of one sort or another and you're sure not going to harm the crown.
Most of the commercial solvents will work well. Shooters Choice has been a favorite for several years since I stopped with the #9, but lately have been using Montana Extreme's cowboy blend.Their bore cleaner and copper remover are pretty good stuff as well.
Just be sure and use good quality patches and jags, along with nylon and brass brushes.
In the 1920's "sheeple" was a term coined by the National Socialist Party in Germany to describe people that would not vote for Hitler. In the 1930's they held Hitler as the only one that would bring pride back to Germany and bring the budget and economy back.....

Dewey rods makes a muzzle protector.  You can order direct what you need.  You can also get jags, brushes, coated rod and patches from Dewey. Just specify the caliber.  From the muzzle using the protector, slip the coated rod thru with a patch wet with Hoppes.  Two wet patches, a few wet brushings and two dry patches and your lead is out.  Lead is the easiest thing to get out. You will feel it and see it on the patches.  Next, Copper.  Use Sweets or a similar product the same way, thru the muzzle.  Your copper will now be gone.  Run a one patch of wet Hoppes, then a few dry patches.  You are ready for cast.
Study after study has shown how dangerous distracted driving is yet people continue to talk on their cell phones while driving. Driving in the U.S. requires your full attention. Many states and countries have made it illegal to use a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle and the federal government should follow their lead. Banning the use of cell phones while driving would have the added benefit of making the no-texting law enforceable.
