I've heard good and bad about this rifle. What's the scoop?

I wouldn't get it - not this lifetime.

Why?  It's very cheap.  The quality, and durability, is just not there.

Just save a little extra money and get a 700 (not 710) adl.

BTW, the scope on the 710 is very cheap as well.

Batchief909 - Zachary is right! You'd be much happier with the 700 ADL or you might even find a 700BDL in good shape on the used gun racks especially now with the short magnum craze in full swing! In the long run you'll be much better off! Good luck with the search!  :D  CEJ..
If I can't take my rifles with me, I don't want to go!

I'm going to DIS_AGREE with Zachary and others on this fine model 710 by remington,I have the .300magnum and its a great shooter at 100yards,1"groups,the scope is'nt worth crap, the stock needs a make-over.I now wish I bought more.
I'm not in VietNam anymore,so get someone else to walk point.('69-'70)

Well there is always one!

I had a similar arguement on another board with a chap who brought a 710. Thought it was a good rifle plenty accurate enough, his is in 30-06 however after 100 rounds it seems that the bolt stop wore out and the bolt will come straight back out of the action when pulled   and after 500 rounds through it the action still has not slicked up and feels like it's full of sand all the time.

But please remember this is a quality rifle

  Yeah right :?  :(

jim21 yes you need to buy more after all SOMEONE HAS TO BUY THEM

I wish Remington would just leave that end of the market to Savage, Mossberg etc.

Maybe make the SPS $50 cheaper and save the money spent on 710 production and marketing.

Most fellas could likely swing an SPS and  become a Remmy fan to boot.

Now killdeer,

You sound like one of those folks on the TV who tell us that "everyone has this or likes this" the fact is that no one has ever asked most of us what we want, have or like.

The fact is that it would probably take a wonderous work of our Lord to make me like a Remington, correction new Remington, I do actually like the Model 30 & 30S maybe even the 720 but as I have never seen one nor had the chance to handle a 720 I cannot say for sure :(

Now a little snippet of shocking news :-

I actually saw two Remington rifles for sale in a shop today      now I have not seen any Remingtons on the racks at a gunshop in many........ many years. Whoops I just remembered that a friend had one of those sorry 710's in stock which I ribbed him about, noticed it was not on display last time I visited so either he actually found someone to buy it    or he hid it out of sight like most would once they got lumbered with one   Today ( yep the shop was open on Sunday) I saw what looked like an ADL fancy gloss finish looks like plastic coating   with exotic wood fore end tip and one with a black plastic stock. Sorry have not got a clue what model that may be but it did not look like a 710.

Still to see one on the range though in fact I am trying to remember when I saw one being shot on the range? Saw some Parker-Hales', a Krico, some CZs' a BSA and an RPA tactical thing.

What does your own "reasoning" tell you!? ..........................???????

Until the "quality made" Remington Model 710 rifle came along, EVERY all-metal rifle action I was aware of could be disassembled/reassembled/customized/rebarreled ad ifinitem as long as the action was cared for and reasonably well-treated.

In other words, all rifles I was aware of prior to the M710 could be expected to outlast their owners of several lifetimes of shooting! .............

Typically a barrel wears out after a couple thousand, few thousand, or even 10,000 rounds of shooting depending on the cartridge and load-intensity.  An an action will outlast [potentially] MANY MANY barrels!

Apparently the M710 action cannot outlast even ONE barrel!

The story about the one .30/06 M710 becoming loose and falling nearly apart is about the third time I've heard of that happening.

Also, if you buy a M710 in whatever cartridge you get at the onset of ownership, that is what it will stay for its VERY SHORT and QUESTIONABLE LIFETIME!  M710 actions cannot be rebarreled after leaving Remington's factory.  Remington DELIBERATELY made their 710's to be that way.

Mine's is a Winchester 270. I have no complains about it except that the Win plant went out of bisness, but other Win plants are still in bisness.

I wouldnt get it, if funds are an issue get a Savage with accutrigger. not so pretty but they sure shoot and are unfailingly reliable. or for a little more get a Rem 700 SPS great gun they skimped on the stock and finish but a very reliable gun and they have a very good recoil pad. If this is the biggest delema in your life your a lucky man. also look at the weatherby vangaurd, made by Howa a very nice gun for the money.
