Good News Fellers- 'In America you have a right to be stupid'

Kerry: 'In America you have a right to be stupid'

In a speech to students in Berlin, the secretary of state defended Americans' rights to be what they want to be.
BERLIN — Secretary of State John Kerry offered a defense of freedom of speech, religion and thought in the United States on Tuesday, telling German students that in America "you have a right to be stupid if you want to be."

"As a country, as a society, we live and breathe the idea of religious freedom and religious tolerance, whatever the religion, and political freedom and political tolerance, whatever the point of view," Kerry told the students in Berlin, the second stop on his inaugural trip as secretary of state.

"People have sometimes wondered about why our Supreme Court allows one group or another to march in a parade even though it's the most provocative thing in the world and they carry signs that are an insult to one group or another," he added.

"The reason is, that's freedom, freedom of speech. In America you have a right to be stupid — if you want to be," he said, prompting laughter. "And you have a right to be disconnected to somebody else if you want to be.

"And we tolerate it. We somehow make it through that. Now, I think that's a virtue. I think that's something worth fighting for," he added. "The important thing is to have the tolerance to say, you know, you can have a different point of view."

Now that's a freedom loving libbydem!! ;) :D 8) :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

John Effing Kerry has taken full advantage of the right to be stupid.  That is the one right that Dumycrats do believe in.

Ya know, on second thought, John Kerry just might have said something that was much more profound than he knew.  I just wish that government at all levels actually practiced what the new Secretary of State said.

One could say that being stupid is in fact being free to do those things that someone else might think is foolish; doing things that do-gooders and government types are constantly concocting new laws and regulations to try to prevent.  Do you really need government to tell you to wear a pfd when you're enjoying certain types of water craft?  Do you really need a law that says you must wear a helmet when riding a motorcycle?  Do you need a Mayor to tell you not to consume large amounts of soft drinks  Do you need government to suppress and control your life?

In deed, being free to be stupid often is the essence of freedom and liberty

What the Dems and BIG Gubment are trying to do is legislate an "AntiDarwin" environment,   so the stupid, inept and controllable population grows.....and becomes dependent on the Nanny State and vote Dem.

seat belt laws ?
Of course it would be simple to just say if you don't wear your seatbelt then insurance has no obligation to pay your claim. IE; if you act stupid then the rest of us don't have to pay for it  ;)

Be very careful with that line of thinking, because it is exactly the rationale for all of liberal thinking when it comes to robbing us of freedom and liberty.  Of course the cost of people doing foolish things must be a consideration, but most important is that we don't let that cost be the reason for everyone losing another piece of liberty.  The most graphic example is what is going on right now with the  attack on our Second Amendment.  No cost in dollars, or human life should be enough to cause us to give up that most important right.

I agree and if one could choose to wear the belt we would still have that freedom. The forced wearing it is bad as would be forced pay off when one chooses to seal his own fate. Govt. should have allowed insurance and customers to work it out but insurance crys to govt.

Kerry is a prime teacher of stupidity. Why does he have to make visits to 9 different countries when we are going financially broke? More wasted money we have to borrow.
