2 new 750 35 whelens
« on: February 21, 2013, 09:55:26 AM »
Just picked up another 750 in 35 whelen in a 22" barrel.  My first was a carbine model.  These are fine handling and shooting guns.  I use my carbine model in the NC mtns. for black bears and whitetails.  I plan to setup the 22" barrel gun with 6x21x44mm Simmons with 200gr. Nosler ABs.  They have proved to be the best and flattest shooting round I have tested.  I plan to make several trips out west to hunt and will be shooting 300-400 yards.

400 yards ??

Why not?  The whelen shoots harder and flatter than an '06.  When I started reloading the Nosler 180gr. AccuBond last spring I loaded it about 2900fps and zeroed it at 100 yards @ 2"s high.  When I shot it at 200 yards it was even higher.  That means the bullet was still rising.  When I get another supply of them I will use this 22" barrel 750 and try it at 300 yards for sure.  The other slug I have had good luck with the Barnes TTSX 180 grainer.  This 180 TTSX has out performed in penetration the Nosler 225 grain partition.

2" high at 100 will put you +.5" at 200, -7" at 300 and -22" at 400. That +2" at 100 is it's highest trajectory.

I know that is what the book say but that is not what I got last summer.  I will test that out here in a couple of weeks.  I got my scope in the mail today and will test fire it this week I hope.  As far as being outdated that is a bunch of nonsense

My 35 Whelan Improved B.A. will shoot accurately at ranges I am not capable of. Had one for 25 years.it would be the last rifle I would get rid of.

My remark of 400 yards was directed at the ethical question of shooting at an animal at that range, not that the cartridge would not shoot that far.

You must have different gravity in your area ! Simple physics dictates that what you experienced , is not possible ! If your rounds were impacting higher at 200 Yds. than at 100 Yds with the same POA , the shooter was responsible !

I now have a decent scope that I can see the target at 200 & 300 yards and when I can get a supply of 200gr. ABs I plan to see if my figures are correct.  Time will tell.

The book is right.  Two inches high at 100 yards makes it a leg-breaker at 400.

If the poster was getting higher hits at 200 yards than the book says, then it might be due to this.  I have often seen people sight in their rifle at 100 yards, being very relaxed and looking straight through the scope from the bench.  But when the target gets moved out to 200, they tense up.  The bullseye looks much much smaller.  They tend to "squinch" up closer to the scope, trying to see the target better, and thus raising up the muzzle of the rifle a tad.  Often, they have also changed the position of their sandbags, to make it more comfortable to shoot, which also changes the original point of impact because they are moving their heads from their original shooting position..

Main point here is this:  The .35 Whelen has never been regarded as a flat-shooting long-range cartridge by any reputable expert.  It is a power house round for taking big game out to 250 yards.  Back in the  early 90s, when there was the sudden revival of this old round, I read everything I could on it.  And range limitation was always mention as one of the few negatives of the cartridge.

The Whelen cannot shoot as flat as a .308 Winchester or .30-06.  And 400 yards is really pushing it on big game for these excellent rounds.  That 35 caliber pill is slowing down much faster from wind drag than the .30 calibers.

  Best, Mannyrock

the height of the rings/scope over the bore will have an effect on the trajectory. with his rings on the high or extra high  side, this could cause the bullet to be higher at 200 yds as described. it will also extend his point blank range 25 to 35 yds, maybe a little more. I know this is true cause I have a 35 whelen mauser set up with a 2.5 to 10 power 50 mm lens scope and with my extra high rings this happens as he describes. I use the nosler 225 gr ballistic tip bullet and a max load of RL-15 in my mauser for hunting. what he describes is exactly what i'm doing. good shooting and hunting.  :)

Hang on to those rifles- Remington has discontinued the 35 Whelen
My elk hunting partner carries the carbine with an extra clip.  It's thick timber with glades where we hunt so there are very few shots over 200.  He thinks the 750 in 35 Whelen is the ultimate EAR (elk assault rifle)  :)
This is not a long range setup. It's for getting in close and unloading a deadly barrage.
My reccomendation is to work up a 220 gr. load
