I am a crotchety ol fart and lecherous old man---but at my age it is expected.
I can wander any campus and the girls expect me to look em over.
Thank God.
SA---I knew in my heart you was 27----I knew it because in my dreams ---well we won't go there --but in my dreams i was young and virile and could shoot my .45 steady and off hand. I like dreams -- they are good reality even if they are not. +++++++I know who your heart belongs to and He lives in NY.
Richard---I thunk we is related.
I am going to investigate this comp thing---it sounds like a fun thing to do.
Blessings

There is another way to a soft shooting 1911/45 without the expense of a comp. My 1911/45 mentor was a bullseye shooter from way back. His load for 25 yd paper punching was an H&G #68 bullet which is your basic 200gr SWC, over 2.9gr of Bullseye. You will need a lighter recoil spring. When I joined the Bullseye guys my IPSC load sounded like a cannon compared to their loads. Make no mistake, 25 yd Bullseye is HARD. Try hitting a 50 cent piece one handed at 25 yards. If you cannot do it 98 times out of 100 you will not win.

Compare the 2.9gr of Bullseye under a 200gr SWC to my IPSC load of 5.7gr of WW261 topped by the same bullet; a world of difference.

Back in the day when I shot 2700 - I shot the 185 grain H&G in front of 2.7 grains of bullseye with a 12# recoil spring.  That load shot well at 25 and 50 yards.

If you're competitive, you should never drop a point at the 25 yard line - that was shot to get your X-count up to speed.  You won the match at 50 yards and you probably lost it at 25 yards if you ever dropped a point, as that guy who was 1 point behind you at 50 yards probably out X'ed ya for the win - I know I "stole" a match that way once but lost the overall 3-gun agg due to poor 50-yard shooting.  You had to be quick & nibble at 25 yards in a no-alibi match, if for some reason you experienced a stovepipe etc.

It was that 50 yard line that separated the men from the boys and back then, optics were not allowed, so one had to have sharp eyes as well as a strong arm.  I fully expect Anderson's world record to fall within the next 3-years due to the excellent optics and 1911's available today.  The record book should have an asterisk next to the new record and note it was shot with optics and a 1911 twice as accurate as those available back in Anderson's day.

william, this is the ans.  get youself a firm breasted young lady. or if you prefer a soft chested young man to hold youself a steady grip on your gun. you might not hit anything but your shooting will be most pleasureable.  getting old takes adjustments.

Good Lordy!   Y'all is killin' me  ;)  wif dis line of conversing!........   I was too young for the Rice Paddys,   and I shoot .45acp in wheelguns, so I cant' add to the 1911 content, ???   and W'm now fortells of what I need to be amembering in the next decade..... :( .   My synopsis of acquiring birthdays is "Gain Knowledge, lose hormones and hair". :-[      Carry on y'all - this has been an enjoyable thread. ;D ;D

BTW - I have never thought either my S&W M1917s or 625 to be a heavy recoiler with GI hardball and both are outright powderpuffs with 200gr LSWC.   I started my son at 10yo on these loads.

um, yellowtail3, perhaps you need bifocals. the title of this post is THE SOFTEST SHOOTING 1911. By definition the CZ75 is not a 1911. But being a CZ75 fan, perhaps you do not understand the difference. The 1911 IS better  ;D

I've heard that said. I've owned a 1911 and I've shot a CZ75 a bunch, and... I'll take either. I'll be buying a CZ next, though...

buy anything you want. It will just prove me right. The 1911 is better. Try to detail strip a CZ75 without losing springs and small parts. Not fun.

Williamlayton, I can answer this for you very easily.  I sent a Colt Officers down to Ken Kelly at Mag-na-port one time.  I had fitted a grip safety to it and I wanted the blued gun Hard Cromed.  He asked me 'Anything else?' and I said 'what ever you think'.  When it came back it was Mag-na-ported; trapizoid through the barrel and a cut through the slide.  I thought it unnecessary until I shot it.  That was the softest shooting 1911 I have ever shot!  It was an amazing difference.  It shot 5" lower at 20 yds which really surprised me as I didn't think the .45 was high pressure enough to benifit from the porting, but it really worked.  I only needed to put a Commander rear sight on it to bring it back up to the sights.  I'm picking up another Combat Commander shortly and it may very well go down to Ken for the treatment also.  Try it, you will be amazed the difference!  44 Man

At 62yo i know the feeling.  I need to put the fork down and start working out again. enough said.
For a soft shooting 1911 i'd go with my norinco with the 16# or 18# recoil spring and FLGR (full length guide rod) because the extra weight up front keeps the muzzle recoil way down.  Its so much easier to shoot and control.  I haven't tried the lower power target loads yet but i'm sure they will be a pleasure to shoot in my norc.
But for an over the counter soft shooting 1911 how about a 9mm 1911?   Or 22cal 1911 just to keep the feel of shooting the 45acp/1911?  There were some conversions for the 1911 in 7,62x25?

I would advise against magnaport for any firearm to be used for personal defense. The increased noise puts you in danger of permanent hearing damage. I had a 5" 1911 with a 6" barrel and magnaport. the increase in muzzle blast was very apparent even with muffs and plugs. Great for range work but not for carry IMO.

Have problems too with recoil, got encephalitis a few years ago and it affected me like rheumatoid arthritis.  I like the 1911 also, shoot a Springfield Range Officer loaded with the Lee 452-200 SWC backed by 4.5 gr Bullseye or 5 gr WW452.  Recoils is mild and accuracy is good.  Even so about 50 rounds is my limit at a session, with a break between 10 shot strings.  I miss the old days too but it is what it is, and hell at least we're still in the game.

Here's what y'all do. You get together and have one custom built. Then ship it to me. After a thorough testing, should only take a few years, I'll promptly send William a full report on how it performs. All I ask for my trouble is that I get to keep the 1911.  ;D
