Value of a old Winchester pump gun...
« on: January 23, 2013, 11:02:17 AM »
Hello guys,
I have a very nice Winchester 62A. I am wondering on value.

This gun was sent back to Winchester some 45 years ago for a new stock and as it turns out a re-blue. It was done more as a " To make it look really nice with the new wood" than because it was worn or rusted. Back then there was no thoughts of values, it was simply a 22 with a cracked stock that needed to be fixed.
I doubt anyone would know it was done as it was done so long ago and done at the factory.

Condition is very good but used, I would say solid 85-90% gun for both bluing and wood. The wood is walnut and nice but not overly figured.

Any guesstimates? I have a friend thats wanting it badly...

If the reconditioning  was all factory (and there is document proof) I would give a value (what I might pay) of  $400 to $500.  But pictures would be a must to give an accurate value.   I've purchased several 62A's in the last year or two.  All were in the 85%  range, very good honest original shooters, and I paid $350 to $400 each (good deals not found often).  62A's in the 92% plus range can demand hundreds more.  Hope this helps.

Current experience with 62's is very helpful information.  8)

All my Win pumprs were very early 1890's and 1906's, and all were sold/traded prior to about 10 years ago.   Would not be much of a clue compared to the 62's at all, let alone now days.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Stopped by a local gunshop this morning. They had a used 62 that I would rate at 85%, asking price was $1,050!

WOW.... I think the key word there is "asking". ::)

I was offered 500. I think its a fair offer but I declined. I have some fond memories with it and do t "need" to sell right now.

I pulled it out and looked it over really close. I have a bit of blue wear at sides of muzzle and under pump forend. Entire rest of gun near perfect and nicely blued no thinning at all. Wood is also very nice with all its finish and shine. So after really looking it over closely, I say its a 75-80% gun.

There is one on GB now that someone is asking 1450$. Mine is MUCH nicer! His has brown/blui g on receiver and not great wood. Heck it's got a knot in the butt stock! I think its a sky hi price looking to cash in on climate today.
Thanks for all the comments.

$500 for one like you describe is probably only a fair deal for the guy you're selling it to.

I don't know where poster blaze is finding them as cheap as he's buying them but around here, your rifle would easily bring $750 if it has a tight action and bright bore.

Only way someone's gonna get mine is if they hit me over the head from behind and take it...

I LOVE pretty wood, and YOURS HAS BEAUTIFUL WOOD V3!!!

The bore on mine is minty, action is used and functions smoothly, so its sure been shot. I would never call it loose nor overly tight. But ill call it correct.  ;)

He is a good friend and surely wants the gun. Its not so much the money as he is a good friend and been there for me more then once. To me, this rifle has more centimantal value than monetry. He wants it for his son to learn on. I never like to suggest a tube fed 22 for learning, there ALWAYS seems to be another bullet in that tube you cannot see... On my suggestion, he bought a Cricket for his boy.

I think I'll keep this winny for a while more. ;)

Here is a couple quick pics...

NO WHERE as pretty wood as yours Vic!!!

EDIT:
I just read threw the Gun Values book.... Seems based on SN this is a FIRST YEAR PRODUCTION M62A,  built in 1932!!! It also seems to have a late model 62A forend...

Victor 3.  I've found several (3?) Winchester 62A's the past 24months on GB auction sight for less than $400.00 in very good "shooter"condition 75-85% plus the FFL fee.  These guns had "buy now" prices on them and I paid that price (original list prices were from $1 to $200 and some bidders had made very low bids trying to get the rifles on the cheap!).  In one case the listing was less than two hours old!!  I just paid the buy now price.  Works for me.  Great rifles.

Little story , about 2 years ago I was working out of town and stopped in a gun shop. It was mostly a military gun shop . On the used gun rack it had 1 - Mod 94 from about 1953 and 2- 22's  like pictured  one with a longer bbl. and and one with a shorter bbl. I have no idea if they were altered or not. I got the 94 for a very low price. The guy knew me and said I messed up ? I said the price was very good . He said when you didn't haggle I knew I had it priced to low. I leave and tell a friend about the 22's and the asking price was $375. each. It was thur. So sat we go back to the store and the price of each was now $1400. each. Could have kicked myself  ::) . Both were in nice used shape maybe 90% + .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Few years back, a Winchester collector told me that someone at the factory must have screwed up when they selected the blank for my stock; he'd only seen a couple of 62As over the years with this much figure.

Yours looks like a nice solid rifle CW. Think hard before you ever decide to sell it.  ;)
