Running out of fire wood!!
« on: February 15, 2004, 06:10:45 AM »
I cant believe that here it is the middle of Feb and I'm running low on firewood. I had about 20 pickup loads of wood going into the fall. I have gone through it and I'm dipping into my reserve pile that I figured I would split this spring and have a start on next fall. Oh well.......

It has been so cold here this year that it is taking more wood to keep thinks warm. Maby this year I will have 40 truck loads going into the fall.

Cutting all that wood is going to cut into shooting and reloading time. :?

Dali Llama say this may suggest to one that relocation to warmer climate may be in order???

But just think of all the money you're saving by not burning propane, natural gas, or heating oil. Burning wood warms you 3 ways, when you cut it, when you split and stack it, and when you burn it. :-D

Night train,
I does warm you when you split it!! We are all electric and it was costing around $250.00 per month on heating bill the first year we lived her. I started buring wood the second year. Electric bills now usually run $70-90 per month, once as low as $48.00 I may try to talk the boss into getting a wood splitter this year.

Big Medicine-We have been lucky this year.I brought in 8 Cords before hunting season and have about 3-4 left.We also only use wood and our electric runs about 60-65 a month in the winter. When it's really cold we run a little heater in the back bedroom to keep the boy warm.If I get less next year it will probably set records for cold,so I bring in 8 every year. Can't have to much wood.

Best of luck.Jayco.

Fell, limbed, bucked, hauled and split 10 cord and have 6 left.Wood is our only source of heat but this winter in the Sierra has been mild.Feb is usually in the single digits, now it is 54 out ,over night 30.I also have about 5 cord down to do this summer.

Jayco,
You are right, one can not have to much wood.

Intrepid,
Where in the Sierra's are you? I spent the last two years I was in the military at the Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center at Pickel Meadows north of Bridgeport.

At least some folks are having a mild winter.

I think I have figured out a way to get a log splitter. I will have the boss go out and try to split some logs. Then it will be her idea to get a log splitter. Then it will be ok.

Big Med.  So you're the one that cut down the great Nebr. forrest!  From the sound of things, it's a wonder that there are any trees left anywhere.  Makes me feel like a piker just burning 2-3 pickup loads a  winter just for effect.  I like your plan to get the Mrs to okee doke the splitter.

Or get a bigger pickup truck.  :)  I thought I'd use one ton of coal this winter and I've used almost 2 tons! Hauling it in wheelbarrows is wearing me out. :yeah:   I'll be glad when Spring is here.

The hidden cost of burning wood. 1-4 wheel drive old wood hauler $2,000. 2. Good chain saw-$350.00 3. Woodsplitter$1,000.00. 4. Labor @ $10.00 per hour $ 1,000.00. 5. Yearly doctor bills from firewood related injuries $ 500.00. 6. Chain saw and truck repairs(one rollover incident) $400.00. NOW TELL ME AGAIN HOW MUCH MONEY I AM SAVING.  :-D  :)  :D

:) Cost effective? Maybe not. But I don't have a powered log splitter. And my time is worth???Nada.    And look at the great outdoors exercise I get. My old Homelite paid for itself many years ago. I like the heat the wood provides.  But if I had my preferrence, I'd be in Florida or Nevada. :)  :-D

Dread, Maby, I can talk the boss into a larger truck. A tactical 5 ton would be nice. As far as Nevada goes, I lived there and shoveled more snow there!! Burned a heck of a lot wood there too.

Cuttin' Wood and Pellet Stoves
« Reply #25 on: February 18, 2004, 09:34:41 AM »
jayco:  you will like your pellet stove when you get it.  I used to cut, split and burn 7-9 cord of wood/year until I got my pellet stove - that was much less labor intensive and much cleaner.  Only problem is when the power goes out, so does your stove.  At least none of us have the workload that choppa does - that's one hay of a lot of wood to deal with.

I dunno 'bout you folks but red oak is the easiest to work with for me, with shagbark hickory and dead or wet elm as the worst.  Although I love the smell of a nice wood fire and still clear my acreage of fallen and dead timber, I don't burn wood any longer - I'd rather put in the time shooting.  Mikey.

Dread,
I dont suppose they shovel as much snow in Vegas. I lived about 11 miles as the crow flies from Taho. The only time I was ever through Vegas was in the summer. Man it was hotter than a .....well you know.

Jayco,
I keep trying on the kid thing, but momma always says she is too tired.   It will be a while before my 3 year old can wield the 16 pound sledge.

Mikey,
I wish I could get some oak to burn. I burn a lot of hedge. It is heavy, but man it burns hot. A guy doesnt want to load the stove with only hedge. I also get quite a bit of hackberry, locus, walnut, and ash. Red oak would be nice.

Ed, What di you do, join the Corps to get out of splittin wood? :-)
