45/70 Barrel Question
« on: January 10, 2013, 05:14:40 AM »
Long time lurker, first post!  Just got my hands on a 300 aac handi and without even firing it i have  the itch to add barrels.  I would like to get a 223 stainless and a 45/70 stainless. I know the 223 is on the list but the 45/70 stainless is not. I know it exists and the part number is part# FR04096.  Anyway to find out if they Will fit it?  The 1-800 number help is not much help if you know what i mean.

Thanks in advance

Welcome!   H&R recently told us they'll only fit barrels that are listed on their accessory barrel webpage, if it's not there, it's not available, any other barrels they may have in stock are for repair replacements. Their phone number is (866)776-9292, be patient, they're busy, best to ask for Lisa Walters.  ;)

Stainless, schmainless, who cares!  Just get a 45-70, one of the best Handi barrels made.  Then get the 30-30, 357Mag., .22LR, .  ;D ;D ;D I found these calibers to be the most accurate of the Handi barrels.  The others aren't bad either.

My quandary, I personally, don't think I have enough Handi's but, I know I have more Handi's than I really need or should have.

The only reason i wanted stainless is that the 300aac receiver has a matte black coating on it and I thought the blued barrels might look "funny".  Maybe not though.

Before ordering any barrels take some time to read some of the many threads on switching barrels vs dedicated receivers.  Switching barrels works for some people and not for others.  Also low or high comb and open sights vs scoped factor into the equation.  For me I started out switching barrels and found out I liked the idea of switching barrels much better than the reality.

"found out I liked the idea better than the reality"; Well put for me also! I really like the grab & go with whatever I want to play with for the day.
I would highly recommend the SS Ultra Hunter in 45-70 as your next purchase  ;) .
