three ?'s about the 94'
« on: February 14, 2004, 05:05:12 PM »
First what is the best (function and looks) ring base combo for this gun and it it doesn't have to be the cheapest for this is my favorite gun even beyond my 2000.00+ custom rifles so I don't mind dropping some money into it.

besides it's ugly are there any disadvantages to the safety everyone complains about on these models.

And last who makes a nicer butt plate for the plastic has got to go.

Thanks for any info

The safety. Other than the fact that it is:
    Redundant
    Something else to break
Prone to being applied at the wrong time[/list:u]
No. There's nothing really wrong with it.

The butt plate. Any competent gunsmith can supply you with a variety.

If you want to go whole hog, there's a manufacturer who advertises in the Cowboy Chronicle that has replacement stocks fitted with the classic crescent butt plates. I don't recall the name.

The safety on the current 94's preclude the use of a tang sight.  You can place a receiver aperture on one, but the longer sight radius afforded by a tang is a non-starter now.

Tangs on 94s

If you are referring to the Winchester 94, tang mounted sights are a real enhancement.  I mounted a Lyman #2 Tang sight on my Winchester without any problems.  Mikey.

You don't say which model M94 you have.  If it is the AE I use Weaver bases and low rings.  A fixed (I mostly use a 2.5X) scope will keep the occular lens forward so your stock weld is correct.

"are there any disadvantages to the safety everyone complains about on these models."

If you have the push button type they are redundant and I was always failing to take it off safe before firing as I still use the original M94s.   I modified mine so on or off the rifle will fire and use the rifle as an original.  I have no experience with the tang mounted safety and do not expect to have any.

"And last who makes a nicer butt plate for the plastic has got to go."

As noted; a gunsmith can fit any number of plain rubber pads or steel butt plates.  Suggest you look at some of his previous work first.  I have seen numerous gunsmiths that usually do good work fit pads very poorly.  They depend on a jig and don't put much hand fitting in the way it is supposed to be done.

Note; before any flamers start a "chicken little" routine about the modified safety; I have a replacement to put back in if I should sell the rifle.

LMG,  yes you are correct,  it is a AE.   I found that Leupold makes a mounting system that I will more than likely go with.

Thanks for the replies, for I don't know why, I have been more interested in my old lever guns over my competition guns lately.  And last is there a trigger out there for the newer 94's or is it just work the original trigger?
