price check on a .243
« on: January 07, 2013, 09:23:12 PM »
lgs has a .243 with laminate stock factory mount cheap rings and tasco pronghorn scope. the butt stock has the turkey logo engraved on one side. finish on the reciever looks like it might be an ultra? i did not think fast enough to check the serieal number for a date code. they are asking 249.00. I don't really "need" a 243. but have been thinkin about that rifle since saturday. might have to go back to see if it is new enough for factory to fit a different barrel. i'm not real fond of the logo in the stock. does this price seem fair? the only local shop with any handis in stock has them at 269 and 299 with just pallet wood new.

That doesn't sound like a bad price, and they might take less. I always ask if they will take less without the scope. Maybe you can get them down to $200. It would part out for more than that.

There was one like that on Gunbroker not long ago. I like the camo laminate stock and the turkey logo isn't that noticeable. You could always sand it off if you don't like it.
I have more guns than I need, but not as many as I want.

I bought a .22-250 like that from a private individual at a gun show for 250 and I figured the way Doc does....I could part it out for that....200 in the rifle and fifty in the scope and rings. The bottom line is the "cheap" Tasco turned out to be a Euro-Class selling now for l75 to 225.  The rifle wouldn't shoot minute of pie plate at 50 yards with anything.  I sent it up to Brian56 at H&R.  He re-barreled it and it is now a 300 yard plus tack driver.

I wouldn't mess with the stock.  I, for one like them.  Sell it on the classifieds and get what you want.  Granted, the Pronghorn is not a Euro-Class, but I think you could easily get your money back if you didn't like the rifle or perhaps even make a buck to turn into what turns your crank.

I agree, you certainly wouldnt lose anything on it and seems anything shy of 3 bills is getting tough to find.

I picked up a synthetic Handi in .243 last November at the lgc. It came with a Bushnell 3x9 Banner scope and was in almost new condition. I paid about $200 out the door. I was real pleased with my purchase and am looking forward to shooting it. The price you mentioned does seem a little high. So its a matter of how bad you really Need it. If you look around you can probably find a better deal.

cbshtr, you stole that one.  The scope and rings are worth almost half of what you paid.  That can't be expected very often.  The 250 is a fair price.

The problem I have given myself is that passing up a 'fair' deal to wait for a 'steal' I have missed out on some decent buys and havent found that 'steal' yet......they just keep going up in price.

Petemi, that was the whatI was thinking. The scope was a selling point. The same day I also bought a synthetic youth combo with a 20 gauge and 7mm/08 with what looks like a decent Simmons 3x9 on it. The condition was as good as the .243. That one out the door was about $265. Some days you are just lucky.
