Connecticut town takes aim at guns, but no longer at slingshots  Published January 07, 2013
FoxNews.com    A Connecticut town that considered requiring that even slingshots be registered with the police chief in the aftermath of the Newtown school shootings dialed back its regulation of weapons, but critics say the measure under consideration still goes too far.
An ordinance before the Weston Board of Selectmen seeks to ban any assault or automatic weapon, as well as high-capacity magazines, and would also require that any firearm be kept in a locked box. Weston residents also will have to register any firearm with the police chief, including rifles, shotguns, pistols and revolvers.

“This is not an effort to cause concern for lawful gun owners," Selectman Dennis Tracey told FoxNews.com. "There’s been significant support for our efforts to re-look at our ordinance, which is over 20 years old and provides insufficient safety measures for our community.”
Under the proposal presented last week, the town would have regulated not just firearms, but other weapons including "long bows, cross bows, slingshots, or other implements that impel with force a projectile if any kind."

"I do believe this is local legislative overreach.”
- Bob Ferguson, resident of Weston, Conn.
But Tracey said the ordinance was revised and references to non-firearm weapons were removed. But language banning assault and automatic weapons altogether, and a requirement that all other firearms be registered with the police department remains, and violators face fines of $500 under the current draft.

Town resident Bob Ferguson said he is concerned the town's bid to regulate firearms could infringe on his Second Amendment rights. He said that even if the town is no longer planning to go after slingshots, the fact that such a move was in the initial draft is troubling.
“It just shows how much overreach the Board of Selectmen is trying to attempt,” Ferguson said. “So, what about a child’s Nerf gun or a Pez dispenser?

“I have a great deal of concern on many levels,” added Ferguson, a 48-year-old bond trader. “To me, it smacks of bifurcating the groups of people in town into two groups, those who have firearms and those who do not. I do believe this is local legislative overreach.”
Ferguson said he’s been in contact with local attorneys who have indicated that the proposal, as it now stands, runs contrary to state law and may be unconstitutional.
“This is the whole reason why we have the Second Amendment, to protect us against legislative overreach like this,” he said. “I think this is one issue in which [town officials] are trying to force their own personal views on the rest of the people in town.”
Tracey said most of the feedback he’s received on the proposal pertained to its registration component, but reiterated that town officials are consulting with attorneys to ensure it will pass legal muster.

“In their view, it could infringe upon the Second Amendment,” Tracey said of detractors. “I understand the concern, but certain weapons are already subject to registration, which does not make [owners] second-class citizens.”
A public hearing will be held following another reading by town officials later this month, Tracey said.
“And only then would it be presented to the selectmen for possible passage,” he said.

we are not a democracy. We are a representative republic. This is to prevent the majority from oppressing a minority. What if whites voted to throw out of the country all non whites? Under a democracy that would be legal. Under a republic the minorities are protected from the current whims of the majority. We have a Constitution for a reason; to protect us from political whims and knee jerk reactions to public outcries. We are among the safest countries in the world. Britain has 2034 violent crimes per 100,000 population. The USA has 474 violent crimes per 100.000.  We live in a very safe country, liberals outcries notwithstanding.

Why do liberals only look at 'GUN CRIME'? Because without guns they can CONTROL US. Make no mistake, gun control = people control. As history teaches us, when guns are banned, people die. ONE HUNDRED SEVENTY ONE MILLION have died when guns were banned.

                      Gun control = government violence

SharonAnne, we're SUPPOSED TO BE a Republic, but that went out the window, when Abraham Lincoln done away with "States Rights" by killing between 650,000 and 1,000,000 Southerners over the price of cotton. In other words, the northern business men wanted the cotton at bargain basement prices, and when the South didn't comply, Lincoln sicked the United States Military on us and killed a lot of people, and burned or seized their property. "Forced Compliance" is a really nice word for the whole thing. Now Lincoln is a hero everywhere, and his legacy is a pitiful lie. Except down here.
And by the way. That throwing all non-whites out of the U.S.? That's exactly what Lincoln intended to do with ALL BLACKS. Every heard of "New Liberia"? President Andrew Jackson had a different approach. He wanted to exterminate all my "non-white" ancestors (Native Americans) so y'all wouldn't have to deal with me.
Yes ma'am, we are long past being an "actual Republic". We are and have been since 1865, a Republic in name only.

So let's see.  My lacrosse stick can throw a Solid rubber ball at over 120 miles and hour so is my lacrosse stick a weapon that needs to be registered in Conn?  My buddy that was a great pitcher and could get a fast ball over 75 Miles per hour would he have to register his arm as a weapon cause he can hurl a projectile at a great speeds not to mention he was good at boxing so I guess his left hook would have to be registered as well.  And if the town makes all registered weapons illegal would they cut off his arms?

And Dee please stop rewritting history.
It was the South that started the war by firing shots on a fort in Charleston harbor.
Not arguing with what you said the cause was but the facts are the facts that a rebel force fired on an US fort.
