H&R 45 colt classic carbine
« on: January 05, 2013, 11:40:04 AM »
I just landed one of these finally
after checking it out and cleaning it I noticed that it will chamber 454 casul ammo like it was designed to do so instead of just 45 colt
I questioned the seller and he told me that he had not had it opened up to 454
my question is would you think it safe to fire 454 ammo out of it as is??

Congrats!! Did he buy it new? If not, the previous owner may have, it's an easy rechamber, specially with the GBO Casull reamer. I wouldn't try it without a chamber cast being done, if there's no room for the brass to grow when it's exposed to upwards of 65kpsi, it could increase pressure even more which could be bad for the gun and the shooter. Chambered properly the CR45LC will handle Casull and 460S&W just fine.

I'm not telling you to try it!  Is the guy you bought it from the original owner?  Many of the colts are long chambered, I would put a bullet (loaded ammo) marked with a permanent marker in the chamber and close it up, open it and see if the bullet is hitting the rifling.  If it is not..........it's all up to you.

If he was the original owner and didn't ream it..........I don't see how a loaded 454 casull round would chamber and close.

I had a BC 45LC that I bought off the shelf, brand new and it too would chamber a 455 Casull???  :o   I never tried to fire one in it though.  This was a couple years ago, regretfully, I sold it in a fit of stupidity.   :'(

thanks for the replies
Rev That was my thought as well
a 454 should not even chamber in the rifle but it does and it closes the same as though there was a 45 colt in the chamber

I had a 45 once and it would just about close on a 454, every barrel I've had were chambered long, before I took my 357 to max it would chamber and fire a 360 DW just fine and almost close on a max. As Tim said before you shoot one do a chamber cast and check all the specs. to make sure all is well.Good luck.
