Went to Gander Mountain yesterday.....
« on: January 05, 2013, 04:26:37 AM »
Had a gift card from Christmas.  Stopped at the new store in Lafayette, IN.  Looking specifically for a H&R Sportster, 17 hmr.  The guns and ammo in that store were so high priced, I'm surprised they sell anything.  The prices on all their handi rifles were higher than anyplace I have ever seen! >:(   The one 17 hmr they had was $20-$30 higher than where I can order one locally.  I checked 17 hmr ammo prices and they were $2 higher than my local Rural King!  Bought a couple pairs of Smartwool socks, and used up the card.  Probably the 1st/last time I go there.

I noticed prices going up at the Gander Mountain close to me, just after they remodeled.  Guess they got to pay for that new paint somehow.  It used to be more reasonable than Bass Pro's in the area, not so much any more.

Our gander mountain used to have good deals sometimes on close out guns, but they remodeled and hid the guns far behind huge glass counters for the most part.  I have not seen anything even resembling a good deal in a long time.  I bought some stuff for my dog about a year ago.  Plenty of better gun and ammo sellers out there.

When I'm near one I always stop in and look around, but seldom buy much, if anything.

Have found a good deal here and there on some of their clearance racks (clothes) and on a couple really rare occasions a decent bargain on the used gun racks.

I really don't see how they stay in business with the way most things are priced.

There guns and ammo have been overpriced for years.  They just had another increase here too.  However in the current state of gun buying panic they are making out like bandits.  Many people that don't shoot much don't even know they are paying higher prices at gander.  Oh the power of advertising.

I was in Gander this week, and noticed that even though their gun prices are high, they have not inflated them like most have.  They had a couple AR's left, at normal prices, and some "tactical" 22's for $400-$500 range.

They did not have any bulk 22 LR which is what I stopped in for.

The only thing I buy at Gander Mountain in my area is hunting and fishing license. These are the only prices they cannot inflate. I advise everyone I know to not shop at any Gander Mountain.

I used too live within 15 miles of a Cabelas. I would love too see a Cabelas come into my area and bring Gander Mountain to its knees forever. I have been a Cabelas club member for many years and still do internet ordering. Cabelas is the only outdoor retail store that I visit for real purchases. I don't and won't buy from Gander Mountain or Bass Pro Shops, but that's my choice.

Online auction sites are my main choices which saves me hundreds if not thousands over the years.

I live where I can go to a Gander Mountain (Wichita) 2 Cabelas (Wichita and Kansas City) and 3 Bas Pro Shops (Indepndence, Mo, Olathe Kansas and Springfield).  One comment made was that Gander's prices were $20 to $30 higher than one could be ordered from a local dealer -  if your dealer had it on his shelf and had his hard earned dollars sitting there in the form of inventory, I bet he would want a few more bucks for his too.  Not defending these three big stores - usually they are all a little higher than a small shop, but then I would expect to be able to order a gun for less than I would pay for one sitting on their shelf. They do invest huge sums of money in inventory that may sit on their shelves for months or even years - one salesman at the Gander in Wichita said he has hundreds of people who come in look at the Sigs' Springfields, etc. and then walk out with nothing or a Glock.  But they all want to see the higher priced guns before they plunk down their money.  Most just look.  The one small dealer in my are that does stock any guns to speak of, rather than order everything, is a few dollars higher as well.  Paying an extra 10% for the priveledge of handling the gun, then taking it home with you right then is worth it sometimes. A person has to remember that the Bass Pro, and Cabelas, and to some degree, Gander are all trying to be Destination stores for tourists, so they invest a lot more in the store itself, as well, which raises overhead and the cost of their goods. I either have purchased or know someone who has purchased guns at all three of these stores - in most cases because they had what I wanted sitting on the shelf.  If you want cheap, go to WalMart - If you want to see a lot of different guns, go to one of the Outdoor giants.  Oh - I suspect we can expect all guns to go up again,  thanks to all the panic buying.

The only reason I go to my local Gander Mountain is because they carry some used guns. Most are over priced but I picked up a nice older 30-30 a few weeks ago for $149 plus tax. It was missing the front sight but otherwise it's great.
I have more guns than I need, but not as many as I want.

Sometimes ya luck out there with what almost appears to be mis-priced stuff, new or used, and a cert. or discount on top of that can make a deal. Im so dissillusioned with our local one that I rarely go in anymore, so Im missing them if they are still happening..........I too wonder how they stay in business.

I haven't had much luck with brick and mortar Gander Mts.  I order online some times.  The store in Paducah seems to be pretty darn high on everything.

You will enjoy the Smart Wool socks. Gander is rarely a good time for me.  Once in a while, often enough to make me come back I'll find something. Not nearly often enough that I go there first for anything.

My local GM has keen competition, in the form of Cabela's and Scheels both within 30 miles. They are headquartered in MN. for Petes sake. They may have no desire to compete, prefering to locate in areas with no real competition, catering to those ignorant enough to wander into their stores.

There are those gems. I picked up a very nice K-Kote SIG P-225 for $500 out the door a few years back. It had not a mark on it, the mags looked as if they had been little used even. I still see the rare deal but it is far too few.

Mo-bio is right about the Paducah Ky. store, but when it first opened it had some good deals.  Same with the one in Jackson TN.  (I live halfway between the two.). It's like they move into an area with little competition and hold their prices low, then jack up their prices later.
