357 Maxi cast booltits
« on: January 03, 2013, 11:04:38 AM »
I'm wanting to start casting bookies for my 2 maxis, never done any before. They like Hornadys 180gr XTPs. What's a good mold/weight bookie to start with? Any other help will be appreciated as well.

Thanx

Mine shoots the Lee 158 grain swc with gas check accurately, From my mold, lubed and checked, they weigh close to 170 grains. I use pure wheel weights. I use AA1680 for most all my maxi loads.

I'd go for (and use) at least a 180gr cast or heavier and also like the Accurate 1680 powder - they even list loads for cast in 180 and 200 gr.

I'm shooting the hornadys over aa1680 now. I like it in the 22" but the 18" handi doesn't care for it. I've got the Lyman's data book, it has a few cast loads in it. I really want to eventually work up a cast boolit for deer/hogs. Thanx

It seems that some of the guys here really like the 190gr Ranch Dog for the Maxi.

And a 190gr made for a 35 Rem, but the Maxi is close enough. ;)

Love my Ranch Dog mold, but I think the sites out of business.

Here's my favorite cast load.

Yea, looks like I'm gonna have to email LeePrecision for mold info. It's best to buy/shoot some before buying the mold? I'd like to try them out. Hope I can make holes in paper like that REVBC.

Night Owl Enterprises (NOE) currently makes a copy of the RD mould but with conventional lube grooves - not sure if they have it currently in stock or you may have to wait for another group buy.

I guess I'll just buy some already made until I find one that "works". I still have to gather everything up to cast with. Hopefully I won't miss a good deal when it pops up. Thanx.

I've been having excellent results with the RD 175 and 190 boolits, both GC and especially PP.  Mine has a 24" 1 in 16 barrel and I use what are considered to be heavy charges of A1680, always stay well inside 1".  Keep an eye on flea-bay and the buy-sell forum over at  the castboolits forum and I'm sure you can find a RD mold, he shut down his business to tend to other important things.  Goatwhiskers

If I were ordering them for my 357 Handi, I'd call (John I think is his name ???) and ask for em lubed as cast to insure they shoot good, I did the same with some of his 38-55 bullets.  ;) Shooting undersize cast bullets is an exercise in futility.  :(

I really have to read up on these cast boolits. I don't know the 1st thing about them or how they work.

1) dont try to shoot them as fast as jacketed (until you are advanced in their use)
2) very often you need a cast bullet several thou' larger in dia. than the typical jacketed bullet for the caliber. So, where a .357 jacketed bullet will work fine, you often want a .359 or even bigger for cast. This is because any propulsion gases getting up past the lead alloy base into the rifling will gas cut (like a cutting torch) the bullet destroying accuracy and causing leading. Jacketed bullets can resist this even though they may (and often are) actually too small for the bore/groove dimensions too.
My rule of thumb is to use as large a cast bullet dia. as comfortably fits a fully fire-formed case mouth as possible and still chambers up and extracts cleanly. You are 'fitting' the bullet to the all important throat, which hopefully is at least groove dia. of the barrel or a tad larger. I used to slug barrels and throats and work a new gun up, for some time now I just do what I say above and it almost always starts working right off.
3) most die sets are designed to load jacketed bullets, so they undersize the neck and button it back out or expander plug it out to jacketed bullet dia. (actually a bit under for proper neck tension). Real die-hard (oops, pun....) cast bullet shooters often get/make expander plugs a bit larger just for lead.
The important thing for you at this point is to know that if you fully resize a case and force an 'oversize' lead bullet into the neck that you are 'sizing' the bullet down a bit, thus undoing some of your proper fitting. Best bet may be to not resize, just decap, recap, bell the case mouth a tad to start the bullet, powder charge and seat a bullet.

+1 what gcrank1 said

I'll add one more thing, if the belling is too large, get a taper crimp die, and just take out the bell, or a hair more so the bullet is held.

also, what has been suggested is to get a LEE factory crimp die, knock out the carbide sizing ring, and use that to just take out the bell, and add as much crimp as you need to hold the bullet.

a LEE FCD is next on MY list

It isn't technical just cast, lube with alox, load, and shoot.

I'm probably making it more difficult than it is. I tend to over think things a lot. Once I see how to check my chamber and see what size my barrel takes. I'll feel a lot more comfortable. Just shot my 7x57 mauser today again. Had some 118gr cast over 8gr of unique. Sue was fun punching holes with it. Even got my wife and son to shoot them. They where just amazed how well it shot. Gonna load the rest of what I have for them to plink with. Trying to keep them interested as well. My son is wanting me to hurry up and load his max with a light cast. It was a real fun afternoon just watching the smiles on their faces. Yep, I'm hooked on cast boolits!  Thanx
