Breech Opens at Firing
« on: December 29, 2012, 09:32:25 AM »
Being it the first time to ever trim barrel lugs to make fit, I did so and everything seemed fine till I fired the new, old stock barrel. Upon firing the breech comes open every time. Is there anything I can do or do I need a a new locking lug for my G2 barrel?

This is the classic reason we suggest you polish, not grind the locking bolts.  It appears you need to call TC and ask for new locking bolts because you dremmeled to much material off of the old ones.

Depending on how much material you removed a heavy duty locking bolt spring may solve the problem.

I guess I assume people look at the stickies at the head of forums before becoming active but I guess not.  I just added words to the title of the first post in the stickies.  It has good instructions about how to handle problems with locking bolts.  You started the right way, but most likely ground off to much material.  I have been tempted at times but have managed to be patient and hand fit the bolts.

Contact TC and ask for a new set of bolts.  Most of the time you will get a new set at no cost, but sometimes that doesn't work with the new ownership.

Good luck.

I think first we should find out why it comes open. In my case it was because the ammo was too long. My MGM 12 inch 44 mag. barrel started doing it. My friend who is very smart when it comes to Contenders told me to check that first. I was loading 240 gr cast truncated cone bullets and didn't realize a little bit of extra effort was needed to close the gun. The shoulder of the bullet was being slightly engraved by the end of the chamber. After a while, the interlock failed to prevent it from firing, thus causing it to come open. My solution was to buy a bolt from MGM, which is the same as the TC bolts. I chose to order from MGM only because I wanted to get it back in action, and didn't want to take a chance of S & W taking their time sending a new one.
This same thing happened back in my handgun silhouette days with a TC 10 inch 30-30 barrel. Back then TC replaced the 1 piece bolt with the newer 2 piece bolt.
To check for ammo fitting, use the barrel off the frame as a gauge. The cartridge must be at least flush with the end of the barrel (pretty much gravity drop).
