.223 one in nine twist
« on: December 28, 2012, 11:48:46 AM »
I just bought a .223-1 in 9 twist barrel off the classifieds and was wandering how heavy of a .224 bullet will shoot well in the handi-rifle. I know they say 55gr and above but how much above before it doesnt stablize. Thanks Rick!

You should be good for all but the heaviest offerings...

The fun part is TRYING!!  ;)

Typically 75gr is the limit for 1:9" twist barrels, 68-70gr seem to be popular in H&Rs from past reports.

I shoot a 1in 9 twist .223 although it's not a Handi, the Sierra 69gr Match King is very accurate, I shoot it with RE15.

My favorite 1:9 bullet is the Hornady 68 grain BTHP... but the 55's shoot good also.

I shoot the Hornady 52 gr. BTHP in the 1 in 9 Superlight, and the 1 in 9 Standard that I sold,  also my 1 in 14 Standard 22-250.  I does great in all of them, so I'm not about to change.   Not this week anyhow ::)

As my esteemed comparde Pete mentioned the Hornady 52 grain shoots very well as does its counterpart the Sierra 52 grain. My Grandkids will tell you there is no better 223 round than the Remington UMC 45 grain hollow point. The 60 grain Sierra hp is another good one.To add more fuel to the fire the Midway Dogtown bullets can be very accurate.
Here is an interesting read on the 5.56 X 45 :

I cannot be of much help with the heavy 224 bullets. The 60gr is as heavy a bullet as I personally shoot, but out of a 22CHeetah moving at 4000 plus fps is is very wicked.
Good Luck and Happy New Year

My Handi is 1-9 and it shoots Sierra 65 gr Game Kings well with 24 grs of Xterminator and CCI small rifle primers .

My 1/9 Handi does super well from 34gr to 69gr.   The 70gr Speer is my current deer bullet but my barrel doesn't like it so much.  I'll try a tad lighter Winchester or something else in the upper 60's range next time.

Testing bullets is most of the fun!  This was the range I tested from 34gr dogtowns to 55gr BK's   :D
