Scope Slippage

Do any of you place your scope turret against the front ring?  I've used a little clear silicone RTV under the rings at times.  Any other thoughts?  I'm using Leupold DD rings on a Leupold base.  The scope is a M8-2X.

The set up you see here has eliminated any and all slippage. I had this base, rings and scope on my 500 S&W Magnum barrel before I moved it over to the 45 LC barrel you see in the picture. I do put a little drop of Lok Tite on the bottom half of each ring before placing the scope and tightening down the top half. Nothing moves until I move it. It'll work on handguns or rifles.

I have always used Warne bases and rings on my Contender. Never had any problems even when I had a 44 Mag. The one I have now came with those rings, have no idea what brand they are but I didn't get any movement with over 50 rounds yesterday. I have never placed the ring against the turret, figured the scope didn't need that stress at that point.
I have never had to add anything to the rings, can't be of much help there. But I suppose a little locktight would work if you are worried they might move. My Big Dot night sights are held on my glock 26 with red locktight. ???  Comes with the sight package.

Turret or bell against a ring - no way.    "Glue" - no way.   Used mostly plain old standard dovetail or windage Leupold or Burris bases and rings even on the handcannons, but I always lapped the rings for maximum contact.   No anything else to hold them, no tube damage and never had a scope slip.   Not on any of the Contender bad boys, nor the Encores including the 416 Rigby.  Folks use Zee rings and achieve about the same, I never felt a need to use them myself.   Did use the T'SOB's some, Redfield, Conetrol and Millett and others on the 6-screw bases, but the standard Leupold or Burris got it done just fine so was the first choices on most of them, even many of the bad boys.
 
If I remember you just got a 357MAX... a kiddie cruiser as Contender cartridges go so not needing anything special for scope mounting IMO (2 rings is plenty), and the Leupold M8 2X is a strong scope.   Lap the DD rings and go shooting/hunting.

Quick and easy method that worked for me with a 12 ga slug gun using Weaver rings - wrap a piece of electrical tape around the scope where the rings go.  That gun is still sighted in 25 years later with no scope movement.

i always use a thin film of locktite
because i have it handy, but the electrical
tape route works as well.

I have never done anything special with that combo (scope, rings, base) and I have it on a lot of Contenders up to a 375 WIN.  I prefer to keep the turret away from the ring and just center it between the rings since eye relief is not an issue.
 
Swampman, can't believe we have been talking about a Contender.  You do know that thing is not made by Remington don't you? :o

like ladobe says, lapping should help on contact. i have stopped slipping 44mag ruger rings by adding sticky back label tape to the inside of rings. it will stop the slip and is simple fix. some factory rings i've seen in the past actually come with "friction pads"(one side sticky back tape).

The first time I used Burris Rings (I think it was Burris) that came with the sticky friction pad I used it.  Scope moved and the paper came half out of the ring.  Threw the paper away and cleaned the ring, no more movement.  Now I throw the paper away and have never had a scope move.
 
Not questioning you a bit Kyode, it is always interesting to me when people have totally different results, not just with scope rings, but with anything in life.

yes....that is interesting. wonder why yours came out? we may never know....lol. could just be a difference in what we used, or just plain dumb luck on my part. :-\  the redhawk rings have had the sticky label in them for, sheesh 15+ yrs maybe more.
one reason it is good to have many opinions/experiences posted on forums. at least it gives a man several things to try. ;D

I've only ever had one scope slip in the rings. That was on a 12" 7mm-08 Encore with Weaver Rings. I fixed the problem with Weaver Quad Lock Scope Rings, and have used them ever since. I know that doesn't help with the Leupold DD Base and Rings but then the advice you have received about lapping the rings should fix the problem.

I use the Burris Signature rings with the polymer inserts as they align the scope to the barrel and don't require lapping. Haven't had a scope move yet.

I've done that in the remote past and it works.  After having had various travails with broken rings and scope slippage, I've gone to the SSK Industries' 4 ring 6 screw TSOB mounts for my heavy hitters such as the 460 and 500 S&W Magnums, the 444 Marlin, etc.  My advice is to do it right the first time even if it costs a little more.
