Too many, never shoot, can't let go..?
« on: December 22, 2012, 07:53:16 AM »
Have some I never shot.  Bought them because I 'dreamed' of using them one day....  just collect dust for that 'someday'.  Still... can't seem to let them go.  Seems like I don't have the time anymore.  But when an opportunity comes along, I take it and maybe put a box or two thru it and then it collects dust.

Too much going on... things changing.  Anyone else?

Since the 'old' world ended yesterday, just wondering...

Happy holidays...
Think as if you LIFE depends on it... IT does..!  Be Well...

Very common. I have a great Elk rifle, I know I will never shoot an elk now. I have an antelope rifle. I will never shoot an antelope. I have many deer rifles. I shoot 2-3 deer every year, not for challenge, but for meat. One would work as well. There are still 2 or 3 things I would like to have , but probably won't use them either. They are just dreams. Most of what I have are only dreams or memories. I don't have much money, but I realize that the little I would gain if I sold them would be worth far less than the dreams. When the last of the dreams are gone, it is time to pack it in. Maybe my grandson will use them, I hope so. I have started giving them to him a little at a time already.

I have had to let maybe a dozen guns go and I still regret it from time to time, however right now I don't feel bad about owning more than my 2 hands can hold and shoot at one time  ;D  I say hang on to 'em !

Just not nearly the time I have had in the past and feeling the urge to stream line things a bit...

if my wife had her way, I'd be down to a .22, a .410, a 12ga, and a CF rifle.

good thing she isn't making the decisions.....

Same thing for me. I'm more a collector than a shooter. Not saying I don't like shooting, just not enough time. Dreams can fit in anytime. Don't give up your dreams.

Recently I sold ten rifles and pistols that I hardly used. I ended up with three Ruger #1s that I hardly use. They look alot nicer in the safe than the ones that went away. I got to shoot them a bit and they are great!

The whole point of having more guns than I need is selecting the ones I'm going to take shooting.  I'm down to 2 that I haven't shot and I have another rifle coming back from the gunsmith with a new barrel and it's going to be like new for me too...

Move over, I'm in the same boat.  I keep telling myself that I'm getting them to give the kids something to remember me by when I pass on, but I think I'm lying to my self.  I'll give some to them on Christmas and birthdays, but finally let a couple go and have more set to go.
Wants and needs change, things that "spoke" to me when I picked them up, have fallen silent, time to evaluate what kids will want and what I still want.  DP

Same here, a few yrs. ago I sold off about 10 or so and now thinking about another7 or 8 and just keeping 2 for long range and a couple for close up woods gun. shotguns will keep only have 2 and a 10-22, pistols and revolvers will keep all of them.

Every once in a while I have the same problem, not enough time. When I get home I plan to thin some of my collection for that exact reason. Kids come first.

I shoot most of mine at least once a year.  I usually take em out and clean em and shoot a few just for kicks.  8)  I reload for every caliber I own, so I plan to play more with all of em once I start casting in a few weeks.  I'm thinking that will end up with me shooting even more, if I end up liking that process.  My main go to guns are my handi's though and I shoot the switch barrel with one of the mating barrels every month at least.  Now that I'm going to use the .223 with downloads for small game, that'll probably be some more too.  ;)  I am culling the handguns some though and just keeping 1 .22 revolver, my .45LC/ACP Blackhawk and the wife's .38 special.  May change and add some others though in the future.  ;)

Just so, and it is not a bad thing to re-evaluate one's life from time to time!
Ive let a bunch go the last couple of years, decided I didnt need or even want to have 'every' stinking caliber to reload  :P . I spread the distance between calibers a lot, and by purpose, rather than having a bunch of overlap and it has been GOOD. I feel so much less 'encumbered' and it is way easier to figure out what to grab and go play with. The 22s are still the mainstay, always ready, cheapest to shoot, and generally more accurate than I am anymore.
Go ahead, thin out and share the joy with everybody here  ;) .

In some ways I say thin 'em.  A man can only shoot so many.  If you cast/reload, then having fewer calibers is better, at least in my book.  Although I wouldn't get too crazy!  The one thing that never changes is that most things change, so I try to keep my bases covered.  I have thinned out a lot since retirement though.

Remember that when you do go to collect your reward there may be someone left behind who has to clean up what you've left behind.  In my case, since I don't hate that person ( :) ) I try to keep my mess as organized as possible.  I've cleaned up behind five people in my time and it's a pile of work.

I just pared down a few.  Then the bug bit and I bought a few more.  Told the wife I was streamlining, so yesterday I had the shooting closet open and she had a look on her face...you know the look.  She said, "I thought you sold some guns?"  I told her they multiply if left alone.

I think I have six I've never shot. Just bought them, handled them a little and put them away. One is a ruger #1, liked the looks and bought it, I think its around here somewhere. Gave several to my kids.
Things change and we just dont have the same desires from year to year. Reloaders setting around gathering dust, man cave needs organized. Maybe next year.. yea.. next year.

I've always been more of a practical gun owner.
I've hunted all my life, and to me a gun was always a tool and I've never owned what I consider a "safe queen" or an expensive firearm.
My first hunting rifle was a surplus rifle I used for years, from my early teens into adulthood, and I still have that first rifle, an old British Mk4 .303 Infield.
I've got a few .22's that I accumulated over the years that are all semi's, a traditional muzzleloader, four shotguns, two being pumps, and two single shots, and then my Handi rifles, which had grown over the last few years in different calibers, but I have since reduced them down to four.  A 45-70, .243, .45 LC, and a 20 gauge Tracker 2.
Of those four Handi's that I use for hunting, are my 45-70 and .45 LC that I reload for, and my slug gun.    I prefer, and get more satisfaction and use from those three guns than from any of my others, and not so much with the .243, and have to admit the others sit in my safe and may not be taken out but a few times a year just to be inspected, wiped down, and put back, but I don't see selling anything any time soon.
They aren't worth much, and nobody is going to get rich with my guns, but to me they are worth holding onto and passing down someday.
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

I'm pretty sure I've gotten rid of the closet queens.  About the only one left is a stainless/synthetic 10/22 that never gets used......but then, everybody has to have one.  Kinda like a 12 ga.

I committed Handi Heresy a short time ago and bought a Marlin 1894CL .32-20 and a Savage 24V .357/20 ga.  That gun is lounging in the sun down in Texas being reamed to Maxi, cut to 18 inches and threaded for chokes.  I'm afraid it may usurp my Handi Maxi as my go to truck gun ::)

I now reload for all the center fires I have. The majority are Handis, and I think I'm done adding to the collection.  I'm simply upgrading stocks, scopes, etc.  I may add .45 Colt and .32-20 revolvers to go with the Handis, but that's about it.  Patty seems to have everything she wants too.

I went through the 'cut back, thin down' a few years ago.  But I find myself 'picking up' a few things from time to time.  :)  So it goes around and comes back around.  I have gun that 'overlap' in usefulness, but that's ok because they are still fun to shoot.  I do find myself now with more time to shoot and enjoy the guns I do have than I used to, so that's a good thing.  I do usually send the 'safe queens' down the road after a while so I can try something else.  I do have a couple of 'expensive' guns, but they get used a lot.  I don't keep guns that I can not use.  I bought an engraved Colt 1911 'one of 500' a few years ago but it gets shot a lot.  I enjoy that gun, and all the others I have.  So what ever you may have, I'm sure you bought it because you wanted to enjoy it and there may come a time that you can do that.  If you never use it and don't care to, then send it down the road.  Just keep shooting!  Merry Christmas to you all.  44 Man

I tend to get something (for good reason, dontcha know) and work it out, then get intrigued by something else and put the other away. Done this more than enough times and there are several in the back that I havent seen or played with in a long time. I get to thinkin' thin 'em out too.......
Then I get the book out, make up some loads and play with one and it all comes back why I got it in the first place........or not.....If it doesnt blow my kilt up anymore after a few tries its time for it to go. Ive regretted a few that have gone when I go full circle (which Ive done a few times).
FWIW, I was recently reviewing an article from over 100yrs ago wherein the author cited his favorite 'rifle battery calibers'; a 22Short, a 22WRF or 22WCF, a 32-20 and a 4-65 or 45-70. All in all, not a bad selection for pot and field.
In that context I modified it a bit; 22LR (about any level of loading is available now, as well as S,L or LR), 22WMR, 30-30 (which I can load from 32-20 equiv. on up), and, if I really need a big bore, the 45-70. Throw in a favorite shotgun and handgun and its an abbreviated, but good list. Yeah......good luck to me to try to get to it....... :P

My boss was gonna' give me a commemorative Winchester 30-30 a few years ago, but he stipulated I could never shoot it, must keep the box clean, and keep it 20 years before I sell it.  I politely turned him down.  If I own it, I'm gonna' shoot it.
